[Hm, that's a new one. I've been getting timeouts or connection refused

Speaking of Ubuntu, BB comes with DMA set to off on the DVD drive making
playback a little jerky. If you intend to play DVDs with Ubuntu, TURN
DMA ON. DAMHIK,IJD,OK? Other than that, I've had no problems with it.

prawn scribbled on the back of a napkin:
Dapper Drake does the same - AFAIK it's because some of the supposedly
    DMA-capable CD & DVD drives aren't.

that's the combined power of reading up about linux distros and
Tanqueray Ten for you. I /meant/ to ask for a pint of beer, not linux.

  7. No. Just got roped into a month at CERN...

At least the newshost is mysteriously up & running, but their
article numbering is fscked -- it reports that it holds ukrm articles from
    1 to 1805412 for example...

I'm pleased that darsy cared enough to reply.

  8. Is there anything left at your house worth stealing anymore ?

It does appear to be the norm when you announce on public forums that you're
    away !!

  9. Yeah, I know, which is why I tend to be slightly cryptic about details
lately. We have a new RA starting tomorrow, the timing's just about right
for him to "borrow" my house while I'm away, to give him a bit more time
to find a place of his own (He's Brazilian, with a wife doing a PhD
somewhere on the Continent; he's taking two years off from being the head
of a University Computer Centre to take our job and be closer to his wife
    and daughter).
