I've sort of done the latter. On a pushbike, down a very steep hill [1]
with no brakes [2] through the open gate [3] and come to rest against
    the tree [4].

[1] I grew up round the foot of the Malvern Hills
[2] In my defense I should state that I didn't know I had no brakes
before I started down the hill. Of course I suspect I should point out
that I had been "improving" the brakes before I left home
[3] Opened with seconds to spare by a passing rambler
[4[ Dragging feet along the floor to slow myself down heading straight
for the tree, staring fixatedly at it, coming to a gentle halt with the
front tyre just caressing the tree bark.

After what he said about you earlier, that's probably a good call.

And after all of the above, Petel sorted out that odd noise coming from
    your bike at the pub.

Yep, that was the one. Turned out to be the left hand fairing lower
    touching down.

I've done that on my DT100 on the way to Fakenham but it was via a hedge
rather than a fence. Followed by a few laps of the field shouting "Oh
    God! I've broken my back"

Other field related offs, again in Norfolk, was during a period of high
winds and hadn't noticed the hedges had finished. I ended up face down
in a very muddy turnip field. I even cleared an irrigation ditch - think
spastic Fenland Steve McQueen - made getting the bike out of the field
    interesting.

Dunno what it is about the Thou, I ride a lot faster than the 750 but
I don't seem to lean over as much. Maybe I hang off more. Dunno.

Yeah. I'm a lot more wary now. Especially as I'm riding once every
couple of weeks rather than every day now. I can feel how out of
practice I am when on the bike and consequently just pansy around.

Still ride faster than on the 750 though, but that's probably because
the go handle has a bit more go.

    I've just scrapped a 120/90 rear with (I measured: how lonely am I?) 5mm
    chicken strips.

    arse hit send before finishing...

It was squared to buggery and I've not been using it on motorways,
totally worn out; the tread described as "drawn on with a pencil"
although it managed a further 250 miles after that judgement was passed
    and was actually bald.

I'd not really used it that hard, normally I don't have any chicken
strips or its only 2mm or so, and it was fucked.

    Dear Cathy and Claire,

    why oh why...

I have a view on this.

Bikes with narrower tyres don't have to be leant over as far as a bike
with wide tyres for the same corner speed.

So a skinny tyred bike can corner faster for the same lean angle -
ignoring chassis, power and contact patch limitations.

If the chicken strips are a lot narrower on your skinny tyred bike it has
been leant over further hence carrying greater corner speed.
