ok - I guess that makes sense. I do remember thinking when I bought
the thing that so much exposed chain looked a little dodgy.

  2. Aye, but "where fitted" becomes compulsory after particular years on
cars and only voluntary before that. If an owner of an older vehicle
decides to fit one it must work.
I doubt if compulsory requirements for bikes were overlooked entirely.

Ah, I sit corrected. We had a few Yank cars through our MOT bay where
I worked, and they passed with the non UK spec indicators.

Doesn't really make sense that they need to be converted, as this
deviates from OEM spec, and that the rear lights are invariably red
    lenses.

Front lights, I can understand, as they won't specifically pass the
    beam test.

gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
    saying:
....even though that OEM spec wouldn't have originally been legal here?

Mine always passed with the red flashers up until last year, but that's
only because the testers either didn't know the rules or didn't care.
I don't think OEM spec makes a jot of difference these days. It has to
meet UK regs regardless of how pedantic they are. I didn't really mind
making it flash amber at the rear, but I objected strongly to having to
fit a fucking rear fog light. I hate the bastard things & think they
    should be banned, not mandatory.

I did leave it on after the MoT, but folded up under the rear valance
so you can barely see it. Needless to say it won't be switched on again
until the next MoT, unlike the full beam which will continue to be
switched on everytime I get stuck behind some **** using their rear
    foglights.
