AOL. I need to give the Z a bit of maintenance before I do Chimay, but I
reckon it's good for the North African run.

I think a 250cc limit (with 200cc being the realistic minimum), any age
would be a sensible approach. 350 miles a day over two days is do-able.
With a rest day then two days return.

    October?

Let me know and I'll decide whether to come home and ride with you, or
meet you there (possibly having ridden on a decent bike - don't fancy
breaking down in the middle of the desert on an old heap of shite; and
    with my mechanical interest).

I'm still thinking of the overland route. 450 a day over three days.
Overnight boat to Caen or Le Havre. First night stop comfortably south of
Bordeaux. Day 2, over the Pyrenees and down to Madrid/Toledo. Day 3, down
to Gib. It might be easiest to stop short of Gib, rather than trying to run
the border late at night with hotel rooms yet to find.

Sean reckoned we were averaging 45mph. If the Z is the smallest bike there,
we can probably better that by 2 or 3.

Dunno about October. I'll probably be down in the Ardeche on the Trophy
    first week.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, platypus
Gib is an absolute shit-hole, totally bereft of anything like a decent
affordable hotel. It manages to distil all that is worst in an English
coastal town, and deposit it in Spain. The sooner it is handed back to
the Spanish so that it can acquire a few decent, well run, welcoming
restaurants, bars and hotels, the better.

So I'd say that was a good call.

  8. I thought it quite pleasant, I did only spend ~10 hours there and the
sun shone which always improves the impression any briefly visited
    place leaves in the memory.

I've visited Gib only once, for a day while I was in Spain 2 years
ago. I thought it weird. Sun, palm trees, good coffee, interesting
history/architecture/townscapes - all good. Sullen Spanish
shopkeepers, hustling taxi drivers, Union flags hanging at every
window, Little Englanders everywhere - not so good. A strange
    atmosphere pervades the place.

Would that have been about the time Teflon Tony was trying to sell

Yeah, and I knew that at the time. It felt like a place under siege,
it really did. Which was good really, as it lent realism to the
    stories of sieges past.

There are reasonably priced hotels, perhaps you are just to stupid
    to ask where they are.
Haven't noticed the pier, and the Rock is inediblt, there are no
postcards featuring fat ladies on sale.
Again you seem to have gone to a different Gibraltar to the one I live
in where there are plenty of bars and restarants. Next time visit the
    tourist office for information.

There is no question of Gibraltar being 'handed back' to anyone
everything here belongs to the Gibraltarians. We have spent lots
of money in providing facilities for tourists, as we get some six
million per year, very few complain, and most return.

*Snort*. Going to the "Tourist" board not a good decision then?
If you think that's what's worst...
Oh, what a good idea! We did that, all their recommendations sucked.
    Mightily.
Anyone got a keep net? Unexpectedly, I seem to have a bite.
It's bloody well hidden then, is all I can say.

No. But one with a decent sized, clean room would have been nice. With
bar staff that smiled occasionally would have been *excellent*. And it
was extremely expensive in comparison with Spain. But hey-ho.
Go on then, give me some examples. Actually, don't bother. I'm never
    going back.

BTW, do you cruise Usenet looking for people saying the Gib is anything
less than a paradise on Earth, or do you ride a bike?
