  19. When the result of a floating-point computation cannot be
    represented in the manner defined for real numbers (e.g. dividing by zero,
    dividing by infinity, etc.) the result is expressed in one of a few
    bit-patterns set aside to represent "not a number", aka NaN. These
    representations include +infinity, -infinity, +underflow and -underflow;
    where the erroneous value can be propagated it may signal an exception --
    a signalling NaN. (Underflows typically may be quietly transformed to
    zero with no effect on the computation.).
