    What instructions?

I just filled it with acid to half way between the min. and max. lines
    and chucked it on charge.

It looks like a really shit battery, IMHO. I know that *shouldn't* make
a huge difference, but, like I've said elsewhere, the last time I saw a
battery like that, it came out of a moped.

Price has everything to do with it. Even if the electric start never works,
if it starts, runs, stops and does everything else that it needs to it will
be better value than most of the clapped out fifth-hand Japanese bikes that
can be got for £700. Apart from anything else, it wont need an MOT for
three years so thats at least £46 quid saved already. There are tens
(possibly hundreds) of thousands of these things in use around the world.
There is extensive information available from users, the vast majority of
whom are more than satisfied. It is obvious that you WANT it to be crap,
but wishing won't make it so. I am happily riding round on mine, which does
over 70mph, uses very little fuel, starts, stops quite quickly and handles
fine despite the knobblies - and mine cost even less than his so, by your
logic, it should be even more "crap". I wish some of my other bikes had
been as crap as my GY200, then I would have spent more time riding and less
    time in the workshop.

I thought you'd been honing your scathing lines on the local WI.

    3/10. Must try harder.

We want (and have come to expect, nay demand) proper abuse man, abuse !

That was an issue on mine that was reset as well. Plug gaps and some
other stuff. The point I was trying to make was just 'cos it's new from
a dealer, doesnt mean it will work. The only thing you get is the
ability to take it back ad infinitum, and sometimes I think its better
    to do it yourself.

Well, if you were really anal about saving weight, you could remove
and blank off the starter motor.

  8. I s'pose that's fair.

It's just that long ago, I started a policy of buying quality stuff
wherever possible - food, tools, whatever - because I'd had so many
disappointments with cheap shit and I'd worked out that spending the
extra to buy something decent in the first place usually seems to work
out as the most economical solution in the long run.

Also, it's not so much the machinery itself, but the back-up. A lot of
these bikes are being flogged by traders who really don't GAF for their
customers. Repeat business is not going to be an issue for them. Not
like it will be for an established bike dealer who knows that if he
treats a customer for an XYZ125 well, then there's a good chance he'll
be selling that customer first a 600 and then maybe an even bigger bike.

If you're prepared to accept that, well and good.

I'm with you on the food and tools. I've now got a Halfords 'Pro' socket
set - it's in a big case and is very heavy, however, the quality of the
tools is superb. I wouldn't have got the bike together with the cheap
    crap I've had before.
Well, I knew *exactly* what I was getting. I don't expect any more
backup than I'd expect from buying a ropey old dirt bike privately.
Parts backup appears to be pretty good from the established importers of
these bikes - I didn't buy from one of the established concerns as they
want nearly double what I paid for the same bike.

As for the stripped thread - if the worst comes to the worst, I have the
option of negging the seller and buying a new top yoke - they're 35 quid
and available within a couple of days.

I do see your point about the target audience, though - for anyone with
less mechanical knowledge than me, the whole process would have been a
    nightmare.

Well, a simple test is to jump-start it. If it turns faster and starts
easily then the problem's the battery.

    Errr, 12V I assume?

Personally, I'd be irritated that the electric start is naff, but I
have no objection to kick-starting a bike if it starts easily that
    way.

Aye, I should try it with my jump-starter pack.
Exactly. Irritating, but easy to kick over, so it's not a priority to
    look into.

Well, I dunno about others, but I've never bought two bikes from the
    same place.

All these were dealer-bought, four of them new.

  13. In uk.rec.motorcycles, SD belched forth and ejected the following:
Nor me. I have been back to a dealer (two of them) that I'd bought from
before but they were taking the piss with new bike prices an part-ex
    values.

  17. SOP on vehicle production lines is to fill the sump and start the
bugger. It's easy enough to drain it afterwards with a suction line, if
that's needed. I'd be surprised if K let the bikes out of the factory
untested on general principle and fwir, most crated bikes show evidence
of there having been oil in for a factory run-up.
I suppose K are taking advantage of there not really needing to be any
oil in the sump for transportation, unlike cars being driven on/off
transporters and ships, and reclaiming the oil, which will amount to a
    significant saving over the year.
