..005 seconds on Google could've answered that, Smee!

He was a journo who liked to "live" the story and immersed himself in what
he was writing about (including the Vietnam War, the Hell's Angles and
    various outlaw drug subcultures).
He also did a fair bit of political "reporting".
In his later years he was famously grumpy and reclusive.
He's most known for writing "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas' and for
inventing (or epitomising) the stupid descriptive "Gonzo Journalism".
I don't know anything about him I just heard all this stuff on TripleJ
    today.

What are you on about? He did it. Where is the note? Or are we to take
his entire portfolio as his testament?

The bastard. How are we to survive four more wars without the king of
    gonzo?

Ignorance is hardly the word. Where have you been for the last 40
years? He is the guy who invented "fear and loathing".

Something on topic from the good doctor:

    And here is the creature:

Ah, fine, fine, a wonderful piece of writing. Was one of my
favorite sigs back when I used to have sigs more often than
I do now. And I hope someone does carve his epitaph appropriately.

Got beaten up by Sonny Barger's mates while Sonny watched.
I don't understand why it's 'sad to hear'. I didn't know the guy, don't want
to know him, to me no different from the other 357,289 people who I didn't
know who also died today. I don't feel sadness (or glee) for any of them.

"I wouldn't recommend overpowered red twins to everyone, but they've
always worked for me." (paraphrased by me)

"He came, he saw, and if he didn't entirely conquer - he came as close
as anybody we are likely to see in the lifetime of this doomed
    generation." (of Muhammad Ali)

"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only
people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over."
(from "Midnight", linked up-thread, I think this was a postscript to
    "Hells Angels")

Yeah I spotted that but then I saw a shiny thing and forgot again.. (I'll
claim I did it to avoid breaching copyright... They're pretty litigious

DOn't kow anything about him? He only wrote what is just about the most
emotive description of fanging ever to be published. Check out the last
chapter of "Hell's Angels". Incredible bit of writing, and somes up the "red
    mist" perfectly.
