HPI checks

My brother is considering (Well he has agreed a price) to purchase a second
hand bike in Edinburgh. We live in N.Ireland and providing the bike is as
described when seen then its a done deal. The amount involved is around £6K
so I'm advising him to get an HPI check done.

So far all I've come up with is hpicheck.com who along with MCN offer this
service for £35.95. They claim to check if its been stolen, an insurance
write off or if there's any outstanding finance. Comes with an up to £10K
compensation package if they get it wrong.

So what say the FOAK, is there another recommended service which is better
and or cheaper or just go with the above?

Good stuff, I'm liking the RAC one especially as my brother is an AA patrol!
I'd already checked AA website but they don't seem to offer this service.

<wonders how long it'll be before Hog spots this post and wants to know what
    the bike is>

Oops, I have just ran a check through the RAC (£24.99). Everything checks ok
    except for this:

"The V5 registration document issue date does not match the information
    provided by the DVLA"

I'm sitting at home studying my V5 and can't find a V5 issue date on it. The
seller provided the bike first registration date which is all he can find,
it matches ok but for the purposes of the check its NFG. According to the
RAC help page its located at the bottom of page 2 (grey bit official use
only) I can't feckin find it on mine and the seller can't find it on his.

Anyhow the RAC recommendation is as follows:

1.. We strongly recommend that you check the vehicle description and
    mileage
2.. We strongly recommend that you check the accuracy of the information
you provided (listed below), and update your check to supply the missing
information and make corrections. Remember to do this by 13 May 2007 and
    before you buy the vehicle.
I've emailed them and shall ring in the morning. If anyone has any ideas
where the V5 issue date really is I'd like to know.

    TIA

On both my car and bike V5C(NI)'s the "Doc Ref No's are 11 digits long
xxxxxxxxxxxx but are not followed by any other numbers. Below this is a
"Des. Codes which looks like xxxxxxxxxx/xxxx. There is nothing that
resembles a date on either of them. Thanks for your help wessie, looks like
a phone call in the morning.

Can be stupidly expensive, but i guess it's the 10 grands worth of insurance
if they tell you it's ok and it's not thing that your paying for.

I used to go out with a lass who worked for one of the big garage chains
(co-op motors) and she could get me hpi checks done for the cost of the
connection to the hpi site with the data on it, which worked out at about
    45p per check.

came in handy when i was buying the van to convert into the motorhome i have
now, what seemed like a half decent van with low mileage showed up that the
mileage was trully low, but because it had spent it's last 2 years going in
and out of auction houses, (every time a hpi check is done it's logged to
the vehicle, and that van had about 50 checks by the same auction group..
which are done each time someone books the vehicle in to be sold by the
    auction house)

Mind, the van i ended up buying... hpi showed it a good un, really one owner
and mileas as advertized, but it didn't tell me that owner drove it like a
twat from Brighton to london on the governor all the time, and hence 2 weeks
after buying it, it decided to eat number 4 exhaust valve.

Anyhoo, all you needs to do is go out with a bird (or bloke if that's your
thing) who works in a second hand car dealership, and exchange a few shags
for a few hpi checks done at true cost :)

Sorted now, when I described where your issue number was the seller was able
to locate his. Ran it through the RAC update facility and everything was
fine. Yesterday the RAC contacted me to confirm this location, actually they
were a little mixed up as they had rang to tell me there is no V5 issue date
    on a N.Ireland V5.

An 06 R6, I'm flying to Edinburgh to pick it up on Saturday morning (Rob not
allowed out to play atm). Back on the ferry from Stranraer late
afternoon. Can you take a helmet as hand luggage with easyjet? Just about
comes under the allowable dimmensions. Perhaps I could wear it during the
    flight!

As long as you have it in a helmet bag of some nature they are usually ok.
Easyjet have baulked with me once, it couldn't go hold luggage (obviously)
so it had to be "held" by the Steward. They again Sleazy are consumate
    fuckwits.

The '06 R6 is a peach but then so was his GSXR600, why can't he go get it.

His SWMBO is due in a couple of weeks. She hasn't been too well of late with
a couple of minor ailments which required hospital treatment. Given half a
chance he'd be off to get it himself but family pressure is making him feel
guilty about it. So I get a free day out in Scotland to collect it )

I did wonder. One hopes all will be ok anyway. Past time you had a beer in
Holywood and I'll introduce you to Zymurgy, although he is a bit of a ****.
