    Ace scribbled:
My bro bought a new ZX10 years ago, picked up from Bristol, riding it
back up north he stopped over in Carlisle and said it was averaging
55mpg. He wasn't flogging it, being brand new, and having just passed
    his test.

ZX10s and ZZR11s are brilliant on petrol if you don't thrash them.
I've had near 50mpg out a ZZR touring across Europe two up.

As I recall the last time[1] I did Donington back to sunny Devon on the
ZX9R I blatted down the various M roads at over a ton and got over
    50mpg. I was most impressed.

I got 55 mpg out of my ZZR6 running it in. Back when I followed the running
in instructions to the letter. 50 mph going up the M5, waving lorries
past... Christ, what a tit I was.

I ride and drive my cars and bikes alike. I do not even consider myself a
    "hard" driver/rider.

Just look at the official fuel stats, that is what you should work to

I never managed to get any of my 3 below 30ish mpg even when caning
    them.

Hmm... 5.28 gallon tank with a 1.43 gallon reserve. So capacity to
reserve is... <removes socks> 3.85 gallons. And I did that in 109 miles,
    so that's... <removes underpants> 28.3 MPG.

Most of which was at 150+ MPH.

    So that's pretty good, really.

    Nonsense! I say again.

You should work with what's actually acheiveable. Most of the fuel
economy figures for cars are idealised: steady 55mph, which nobody really
does. (Nobody without a pipe and a tweed cap, anyway.)

I've had 180 miles from the Guzzi tank of 24 litres - from full to
phoning Champ - which is 33 mpg.

I suppose that's not too bad but I have had 55 mpg out of it in the past.

I got 50mpg out of my CBR600 on a 500 mile round trip from Essex to
Middlesborough. And I was cruising at between 100 and 120mph.

Sorry, you're confusing me now. Have you changed your mind and now
agree that big bikes *do* have the economy of a small car, provided
    they've got a fairing?

Oh aye, I'm fairly sure if I were to ride the gixxer like like that I
could push it up close to 60mpg. But that would be defeating the point
of the bike. The fact of its fuel efficiency is certainly a large
factor in its flexibility as a tourer, but ultimately it's not the
    be-all and end-all of it.

Depends how they are ridden , and faired bikes obtain a better MPG at
    speed than an unfaired equiv.
