How to make a £450 helmet worth £0 without hurting your head

Dropped my new helmet from the top of the wardrobe and now have a
cracked fin or whatever it is on top of the Aria (RX-7 Corsair) .

It was about a 6ft drop and hit the side of the bed on the way down,
    landing on the carpet.

I guess that's what accidental damage on the house insurance is for :-(

Seem to awfully hamfisted these days, I think I'd better stay away from
    the bike for a while.

Claim for it and take the dosh. When you've got the cash in hand send
the lid back to Phoenix Distribution and they'll assess if it's safe to
wear. You can always buy a new top fin thingy and fit it as well.

I doubt a 6 foot drop onto carpet after having the fall broken by the
bed will have damaged it sufficiently to render it useless. It sounds to
me like the fin thing has taken the brunt of the impact anyway.

AOL. The lid is designed to take impact damage at 120MPH+, not a
gravity drop onto carpet. I'd wear it.

I tripped on a concrete staircase and fell on top of my Shoei, gouging
a deep scratch out of the side of it.

Now that's what I call structurally trashed.

They let you wear your helmet in the cells?
Not as trashed as someone was this evening...

Well, I might admit to a couple of sherberts after a hard week, but
    i'm not completely unintelligible.

    What's your point ? ;)

When I did my CBT I was told that I should always store my helmet
somewhere out of the way on the floor as it's not going to fall down
anywhere if it's already on the floor.

I agree. A test was carried out some time ago on a few leading brands, they
dropped helmets on to a concrete floor from different heights ranging from
3ft to about 15ft. They all passed the safety test afterwards.

  9. It'll be fine. The fin thing absorbed the impact. Just get a new fin
thing. Phoenix used to supply bits for free. Don't know if they still do.

    I've <cough> seen a f'glass helmet ricochet'd off someones head and into
a glass fire door so hard it smashed the wired glass. The shards were
picked out and it did a couple of years more good service on and off
    road.

Get a new fin and just wear it.

I always hang my crash helmet over a mirror rather than put it on the
floor where it can get accidentally kicked. It's also normal for me to
leave my crash helmet on my bike when I'm on a ferry rather than carry
    the thing to the bar.

Obviously I need to go and do CBT because my training and common sense
    are both sadly lacking.

Well, exactly. I do too. I've seen a few fall mind, when the lid has
been lobbed over the mirror rather than hanging the chinpiece over the
mirror arm by opening the visor and letting the mirror come through
the face aperture. Done the right way, it's the best way to hang your
    lid safely.

I was speaking of in the 'home' environment, if there isn't a
designated place to stare such headwear.

When I'm out and I wish to leave the helmet with the bike I use the
helmet hook thinger or open the visor and hang it to the bars through
    that.

Normally I do leave it on the floor but the missus took a fissy hit
about not wanting it lying on the floor in the bedroom that day. I
wasn't going to leave it in the hall because my last one kept getting
    banged about by the kids.

  17. For "kicked" read "infested by bugs".
That's what a top box is for. Whenever I tour I leave the top box empty
as when I park the bike on the ferry or whatever, I can fit 2 full-face
lids in there. I think I need to work on my commas. Learning spanish is
    totally fucking up my english.
As in how to manouver a bike without dropping it? Between 2 people? In a
pit garage? Before anybody's even sat on it?

    Happy days.

    Yeah, I'd better join you.

Donald banged the rocks together and they said :
Thats ok then, the money put aside for her "pamper day" or "new shoes"
can be used to buy new / repair lid.

And when she sulks for days she'll be quiet.

    Win-win situation.

I put one of these up in the hall (under the stairs, as it happens):

    http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stor...20&categoryId=17098&chosenPartNumber=65161283

it holds huge numbers of coats on the pegs on the legs, a rack of
gear on hangers on the tube and three helmets and a couple of tankbags
on the shelf. Not bad for fifteen quid and ten minutes to stick it to
    the wall.
