How to Levitate Your Motorcycle...

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by Larry xlax Lovisone, Nov 3, 2003.

  1. You know I can't go 200 miles without lubing my chain let alone a 1400
mile round trip to L.A. and back... that's a problem given the exotic
nature of the RC45... a bike true to it's racing heritage has no center
    stand...

So during the week prior I machined out a maintenance stand small enough
to fit inside a tank bag...
    http://home.comcast.net/~netters2/pics11-3-03/imagepages/RC45FoldingMaint.Stand.html

Unfolded... it stands erect and ready with it's eye peaking at you...
    http://home.comcast.net/~netters2/pics11-3-03/imagepages/RC45Maint.StandErect.html

Hang the eye over the right foot peg...
    http://home.comcast.net/~netters2/pics11-3-03/imagepages/RC45Maint.StandAttached.html

A Delrin extension slips under the aluminum side stand...
    http://home.comcast.net/~netters2/pics11-3-03/imagepages/RC45DelrinSideStandExt.html

Now your ready to levitate it up by turning the jack screw... behold in
about 18 turns... the 1 lb 2 oz maint. stand lifts 209 lbs of motorcycle
    easily...
    http://home.comcast.net/~netters2/pics11-3-03/imagepages/RC45Maint.StandLifts209pds.html

Just think of all the chain lube I'll save once I finish Mr.RC45's belt
drive conversion... no to mention leaving my light weight folding
    maintenance stand home...

Um, Larry. Why wouldn't a belt drive conversion be a slap in the face of your
    bike's exotic racing heritage?

    RC45's only weigh 209lbs?

    Wow.

  7. Tim...
1... belts are 5 lb. lighter than chain...

2... a new belt takes 2% of available engine power and never takes more
until it snaps... whereas a new chain takes 2% but a old chain can take
up to 15% of available engine power...

3... belts don't need slack and therefore are positive drives whereas
chains need slack and are snatch drives

So lighter... more power... less snatch still rings true with HRC's
design goals and is no way a slap in Mr.RC45's race face...

  10. I dunno which playbook you're reading from. Everything in my life thus
far has been carefully plotted out to INCREASE snatch.

  12. I think he meant to say that's the half of Mr. RC45 that the stand
supports. 418 lbs. sounds more like it, though I'm sure Larry is not
at all beyond inflating the tires with hydrogen gas to shave off that
    remaining 3/4 gram.

Neat trick Lar, as usual a high mil-spec feel to everything you do.
Patents cost $$$$ so unless yer gonna produce this little gizmo, was
    da point?

Now as to producing said gizmo... methinks you have an idea here. You
know how many times I've begged with the gods for a centerstand? I am
not alone. I can see how this unit's appeal would be dramatically
improved with a couple of design tweaks. That and of course a "made in
China" price point and you'd prolly sell millions of the little
    fuckers. Ok, maybe thousands.

  13. 'Course, your awesome, custom designed and built stand is supporting
more weight than 209lbs since it's near the center of the bike.

  16. The weight and balance at the foot peg is not the whole 418 lb. but it
is slightly greater than 209... not by much though...
You're just in my shadow Jr. Pudknocker--as usual... witness the
redesigned 3 times over since last night... currently I just added a
light weight custom ratchet to turn the jack screw quicker... it makes a
nice clickey-da-click sound too boot... I've sent Charlie V of Pitbull
stands my ideas... maybe something will come of it...

  17. Thanks Henry... No it doesn't... a solid foot peg is a hard point
protecting the vitals of a fallen bike... whereas a folding foot peg
allows blunt trauma to the vitals...

  18. DORK! Bouncing ideas off of industry types before you have an
agreement or patent in place? Intentionally trying to secure a
middleman when contracted manufacturing is easy as pie these days?

Tsk tsk Larry. I thought our conversations had laid upon fertile
ground and planted the seed of free enterprise in that scheming little
head of yours. Anyone can file for patent right about now and beat you
to the punch. Ugly things happen when money gets in the way.

can only trust him more... besides he wishes to file patents in my name...
