How to learn to "wrench your own"

I have Harley and Buell bikes and want to start wrenching my own. I have
VERY limited mechanical skills (read - never took shop in school but do own
    a ratchet set).

Does anyone have any experience with the "mail order mechanic" schools? I
don't want to quit my day job -just want to be able to do my own work.
Example: I want to feel confident about putting a 6 speed into my HD. I want
to do my own 5K and 10K service.

Other than the mail order programs, are there other options?

    Thanks!

Well, hanging out around some of the locals and acting all cute and
clueless got me taught a lot, but I doubt it'd work as well for a guy.
Then again, if you find a chick who does her own wrenchin, you might get
lucky (in one way or another, at least).

  3. Go to the school or hard knocks.
Get a basket case. Ride. Restore. Wrench. Repeat.

Like others said, a factory repair manual is a great first step.
Decent tools is another (get a torque wrench)
Then, the internet is a great source of information on anything.
Google and dejanews(newsgroup archives) are your friends.

    Forgive the top post:
See if your local junior college offers a small engine repair course.
Here in Dallas, TX Cedar Valley College offers a full certification
program for motorcycle repair. Just as good as MMI and instead of
paying $18,000 it cost $135 per course of 7, day and evening classes
    available.

Check out the above book on Amazon. Very good information in an easy
to read format that explains a lot in a non bike-specific format.
    Good luck, Dave
