Lucky me, I'm off to Brisbane from Melbourne via Wollongong and have to get
through Sydney. Whats the best way to go through or around Sydney?? It's
been 20 years since I lived in Sydney and I am sure there are a few new
free/toll ways, but are there any that allow you to travel north/south. I
dont mind paying the odd toll, as long as I am prepared for it and have the
money ready. (Why cant you be like Melbourne and bikes travel for
free??????) Anyway, whats the best way to go?

    Thanks

  2. From wollongong
    -Appin
    -Campbelltown, Narellan
-Penrith, then Windsor (via Northern Rd)
-Putty rd up to Singleton and the New England Hwy

    or
    -Appin
    -Campbelltown (Hume Hwy)
    -Liverpool
-Cumberland Hwy(22) to Pennant Hills Rd and Hornsby
    -F3 freeway heading north

2nd route is probably a bit quicker getting through Sydney, the first route
    is a better ride.

Thanks heaps - decisions decisions. Putty road sounds good tho. Only
problem is that I will be leaving Wollongong at the end of the day, so looks
like I will have to stick to less country roads to make as much ground as
    possible.

I hadn't been through Sydney before and I couldn't believe there wasn't an
arterial that carried traffic from one side to the other like there is in
Brisbane and Melbourne. We took the first option below, but it was still full
of traffic lights and 60kph suburban roads. But of course Sydney believes it
is the centre of the known universe, and looks down on anyone with the
temerity to actually want to go straight through it without stopping.

The putty is a good road, but it had one too many Beemers on it for my
liking. Just make sure you don't run yours into any braking Fizzers at the
    Halfway Roadhouse!

"Westlink M7 is the new name for the road previously known as
the Western Sydney Orbital. The Westlink name reflects the
motorway's role as the western link in Sydney's orbital
motorway network. Westlink M7 will be the link between the
M2, M4 and M5 motorways in the western suburbs. Major
construction started on the Westlink M7 on 7 July 2003.
The 40km Westlink M7 is Australia's biggest urban road
project and is a key missing link in Sydney’s orbital road
    network of motorways." (RTA)

What they conveniently exclude from their diatribe is that
once that road is done, you *will* have the option of skirting
all the way around Syd-en-ey from one end to the other, *but*
that it will probably cost you twenty bucks in assorted
fees and tolls to make use of all of the roads.

Hey! The Putty *is* our arterial that carries traffic from, er,
    somewhere to somewhere else!

Depends how pissed off you get with paying tolls.

If you don't care about tolls, come up through Appin to Campbelltown, jump
on the M5, and follow it all the way north, through the tunnel and up to the
Pacific Highway at Chatswood, then keep going. It'll cost you something
around $7-$8 in tolls {one at the M5, one at the end of the Eastern tunnel}.
You'll only start hitting lights/slowdowns once you get over the other side
of the harbour and hit the Pacific Hwy.

If tolls piss you off, then get to Campbelltown, then head up the Hume Hwy/
Liverpool road until you get to the Cumberland Highway, take that to
James Rouse drive, then turn right and head to Pennant Hills road, then
follow that to the freeway at Hornsby. No tolls, but a bucketload of
    traffic lights and 60k zones.

Well there is actually - M5 goes from Hume Hwy as a freeway all the way through
& under the city and harbour until it drops you out on the Pacific Hwy in the
North Shore, you have to trudge up it for 10-15 K (60K/70K but dual/triple lane
and hardly a suburban rd) and then you get onto the F3 to Newcastle. The only
navigation between Goulburn and Newcastle is to ensure you take the Pacific
Highway exit after the harbour (gore hill freeway) rather than staying on it and
ending up in the west, other than that it's just follow your nose and head
    north.

Almost exactly the same as Briz - logan motorway, little bit of semisuburban
multi lane on the north side of the city then back onto freeway. Similar to an
east west run in melb where you're mostly freeway except that confusing poorly
    signposted bit near the city.
Nobody on ausmoto would tell you the above because it's boring as batshit !!
    It's not a bike road it's a road for stupid cagers :)

The best way to go is the way that you know; getting lost just once
will blow off any benefits from going an alleged better way.

From the Gong, stay on the freeway into town, the Princes to St.
Peters, Newtown, City Rd, George St, over the coathanger, the Princes
again to the F3... none of that's changed for over 20 years...

I'd do that, except for turning right at President Ave off the princes hwy, going to brighton le sands, thrn left onto, uhm, hell,
that main street in brighton, and following that road north, be sure to stick to the left two lanes after going under the airport
tunnel, and stick to the right two thereafter (make sure you go into the area marked "TOLLWAY", etc. so you can go under
the city & make sure you take the right hand option once you get past the toll booth. After that, just follow the road and don't
turn off elsewhere and you'll pop out on the other side of the harbour.

Confused? so am i, but it'll make sense once you look at a roadmap

Not quite, in my view. Trying to take the Princes Highway
through Newtown will bits big time. Traffic *always* moves
at a crawl through the full length of the shopping strip,
and then when you think you've finally made it through,
you stop for the lights on Broadway and a swarm of uncouth
drunken drug addicts will swarm all over your car making the
windscreen dirtier than it was when they started, and
expecting to be paid for it! I've become very good at timing
trips through those lights so that I don't have to stop!

On a bike, well the battle through Newtown isn't anything
that will be any faster on a bike unfortunately. There's
not really any additional room for lane splitting, etc, so
you''ll be a bit quicker than the cars, but not much.

I'd do that, except for staying left on South Dowling St and
    avoiding the whole 300m-of-road-for-$3.50-and-sore-nuts toll
thing. Turn left onto Cleveland St, and right onto Crown St
(second lights, first possible right turn at lights). Follow
Crown to the end (40K zone all the way, plenty of road cancer,
but easy and quick to negotiate on a bike - lots of opportunities
to skip to the front of the line at major intersections. Right
at the far end of Crown St pops you out at the point where the
dumb punters are busy paying their toll for their 300m jaunt
under the cesspit of Sydney that you've just enjoyed with your
own eyes, then follow the bouncing ball into the Cahill (?)
tunnel and onto your choice of the Harbour Tunnel or that
loong long long long sweeping left hander that never ends
    up onto the Bridge.

That route is a dogs breakfast in a car, but very comfy on
a bike. Why pay all that cash for less than a minute on a
    toll road?

They should call 'em "TOLLWAYS" just to make it clear! They are not
    motorways nor freeways but tollways.

And I'd rather pay $3.30 and use the M? to avoid the cunberland road
(read traffic light maze) and then go up ring road 3 ... much quicker
    and less hassle.

But the best way around sydney is the putty. Even with the sports bikes
overtakin around blind corners in to on comming cars..

When SWMBO and I head to the "in-laws" who live in Lismore we normally go
    this way (in the cage):

    - Up the F6 to Waterfall
    - Stay on the Princes Hwy until Blakehurst
    - Take the left fork in the road and head up King Georges Rd.
    - This road has a few identity crises on the way north, but it's generally
    known as the "M3".
    - Up around Kuring-gai (sp?) you take a left through the northern burbs
(beware of soccer mums in their 4WD Beemers!) - used to be a big "Freedom"
store on the right where you're supposed to turn...but it's gone now.
    - Follow your nose for about 3km, then you get to a big-arse intersection to
    turn right onto the F3.
    - Done :)

Of course if you try this route at any time between about 7am and 11:59pm it
would be quicker to get off your bike and push it along the foot-path
through Sydney! We normally head north out of the 'Gong around 4am and
just drive all day until we hit Lismore :) No we don't stop every 2
freakin' hours! It's already an 11hr trip with one stop for bladder/fuel at
    Coffs Habour!!

Anyone been all the way up the New England recently? How does it compare
(trip time) with the Pathetic, I mean "Pacific" Hwy?? What's the New
England like as far as surface quality, speed enforcement, traffic etc?
