How the hell did I do it for so long....

The single best thing about London is watching northerners come down and pay
for their first round. Their expressions are worth my mortgage alone.

No you can't. Show me the Ronnie Scotts in Lancaster, or the National
Gallery in Derby, or Regents Park in Plymouth. Show me the Houses of
Parliament in Leeds, or one of the world's financial centres in
    Scunthorpe.
    London's an exceptionally green city.
I dispute what you've said above. "Stinking cesspit" is a matter of
opinion. The other items are presented as fact, and I dispute them.

London is ok as cities go, but I prefer Sydney, which I think outshines
London in almost every way except the history.

You obviously have a different interpretation of 'good' from me. I
accept that some people like jazz and looking at paintings, but
there's plenty of other non-London venues for each around the world.
And Derby's musem and art gallery is particularly impressive, as it
    happens.
Actually, it's not, compared with many other cities. It's just the
size that makes that particular view common - there's just so much of
London that of course it encloses quite a lot of green space, but
proportionally I think there's at least as much in, say Brussels,
    Paris, or even Manhattan.

It's only if you extend it to Greater London that you start to include
the big green spaces like Wimbledon, Richmond, Hampstead etc. And
they're just artificial relics of bygone times, rather than
coutryside, which is what I was alluding to.
So you don't think it's a dirty place at all?
As you're fully entitled to do.

ah - now we find out why you couldn't make any money in the couriering
    business.

it really ought to be in the FAQ - I'm *so* tired of this "argument".

    Like London? Live there.
Don't like London? Don't live there.

I can't see the point of debate, and yet I still find myself getting
    sucked into it.

    [London]
this simply isn't true. I live in a reasonably big house, in a nice
area, close to a train station and it's ~30 minutes into Liverpool St,
or ~20 minutes to King's Cross via a tube connection. As for your
first point, it depends on your definition of hideously expensive.
It's all relative - our mortgage payment is ~20% of our net income -
this leaves quite a lot for other things.

    You thought wrong, mate.

I've never lived there. I live about a 10 minute bike ride from the west
end. My job, when I'm doing one, covers the whole of London and not just
the bits the tourists see so I think I'm well qualified to comment.

    OK

Like London a lot? Live there.
Don't like London? Don't live there.
Like London a bit? Visit now and again.

    Better?

I have two "things to do":

    1) review a bunch of accessibility guidelines with a view to telling
the code monkeys to strip out all their lovely multiply-embedded
tables and replace whem with CSS

    2) hassle the infrastructure monkeys about getting hardware made
    available for 3-tier-security feasibility testing.

neither appeals, and neither is particularly urgent.

Property prices are up there with London, though. And wages are
    much, much lower.

Sydney is fantastic but only because of it's harbour location.
The city itself is still better than average but I preferred Melbourne.

In fact, I'm going to offer my top three as New York, London, Melbourne.
