  2. Quite possibly they have had a visit from immigration , department
of works and pensions or others in a similar have .

When i was subbying in bristol they raided the site and removed 30 Mr
shings (actually spelt that way) with italian passports all ilegals
all various nationalities plus several others with french and
    portugese documentation .

The main contractor got fined about 100K and everyone had to prove
thier status over the next week or so or was barred from the job

  3. Its not just wether they need permits or visas or not they check to
see if Mrs Beav is actually Mrs beav and not Mrs ......... from
......... pretending to be Mrs Beav

When i got checked a few years back it wasnt a case of just box
ticking i had to prove that i had taken appropriate steps to varify
who my staff were includeing immigration checks copies of passports ,
    birth certificates where deemed required.

The onus unfortunatly is placed on employers however there was very
little in the way of guidence in how to impliement these checks and
the excuse his passport and visa looked ok is not sufficient as a
    defence

Yeah, it's a thought we had too, but she's taken all her "papers" into work
today anyway, apart from a visa and a work permit.
Excellent. I wonder if they'll come for her. I know I do.
Apparently, all they want now is to see if the photo in her passport is a
"good likeness". Well as it's a picture of her, she's convinced that it is.

Or celery, the vegetarian stiffener: you don't eat it, you use it as

  13. Cue Old Joke:

Little lad, playing in garden, suddenly says to Grandpa In Deck Chair:
"Look Grandpa, I've pulled a worm out of its hole!"

GIDC (tilting Panama over face)" "Very good, lad. Now, I'll give you a
fiver if you can push it back into its hole again."

<cue half an hour of frantic small kid activity>

    and...

"Look, Grandpa!" and the kid is holding up a worm that is as stiff as a
pencil. And with the tip of his forefinger, he gently pushes it back
    into the ground.

    GIDC is gobsmacked.

"How did you do that, lad?"

    "Mum's hairspray, Grandpa."

"Well, I'd better get you your fiver, then...." and off he toddles, and
he's gone for half an hour. When he finally returns, kid is agog, and
GIDC hands over a crisp tenner and says: "Here you are, lad. Here's your
fiver. And there's another from your Grandma."

Having recently attended a Chinese wedding, albeit not in china the
serving of tea AIUI is a respect thing done to the older folks in
order, in this case starting with the wife's 93 year old granny. The
legal part of the wedding was the couple going to the government
office and getting the paperwork completed sans anyone else.

That's as maybe, but Steve is that 93 year old granny and he's talking
    about the 1850s.

The granny appeared to be sprightly and lucid[1] and didn't smell of
wee so no relation to Auvache.

[1] Well as near as I can tell my Thai being somewhat limited.

  17. Nearly right.

Who knows when these folks would have been married, some of them almost
certainly before Mao took over and who knows the state of the Chinese
civil service back in those times but the point I was making was not that
it was recognised as legal for the chinks and who gives a flying ****
about them but whether or not it was legal from the perspective of the
    long suffering British Taxpayer.

Platinum me. And non of your "Slim tip" comments either.
All sorted now and the HR bod is pretending she never asked the questions in
the first place, as all the details are already in her files and have been
since a few days before she started working for them.
