How odd.

Our company asked the same of all employees last year, stating that we
all had to prove we were eligible for work.

Naturally, I was curious and googled for the legislation that required
this and found that a drivers licence is not acceptable as proof.

Plus, ISTR that it's not retrospective, so asking someone who ahas
worked for X years already was a bit pointless.

It's happening here too. HR were not impressed when I pointed out that
an Irish citizen, who has every right to work here, might not have a
passport or driving licence to `prove' their right to work.

  6. You can imagine how much it hurt to explain that there is no such
record in the UK and that you were not married until you could prove
that you are. Sort of like "innocent before proven guilty".

It makes perfect sense in the Dutch system as the Gemeente (local
municipality) deals with just about everything from
Births/Deaths/Marriages/Drivers/Passports/etc as well as parts of the
    immigration process.

As a resident, you *must* be registered at your local Gemeente,
therefore they know everything about you, therefore they can print a
document that states all of your personal details, sign, stamp and
    legalise it. Job done.

I'm not sure I like it, but there is a certain air of efficiency to it,
even if the Dutch do then **** up most other stuff (including the
application/handling of some of the things listed) with mountains of
    red tape.

  7. A driving licence wouldn't prove you have right to work anyway.

Does that involve a rubber chicken?

They ask UK nationals for a driving licence as proof of identity and
of place of birth. In that case it is an `indirect proof'.

If they were that clever, I'd be worried.
She's married to me, so of course, she *does* think herself lucky.
I insist that she does wear the aforementioned articles and her chain is
very short. Unfortunately in this enlightened age, we're all Eurocunts now.

Troo, but the Immigration Service, to which Google happily points, certainly
    would.

Oh, they want *her* to provide proof that she *has* a visa. A visa that
doesn't exist, so can't be applied for. They want *her* to provide evidence
of her work permit. A permit that doesn't exist for EU nationals or those
married to UK citizens. they simply haven't done their own homework.
Obviously, someone is lacking in their duties as she's worked for this
    company for 4 years.

She loves sex. That should surely be more than enough and anyway, all those
details are held on her records at work. Name, place and date of birth,
    passport number, the lot.

So people without a passport are denied employment?
