If you get "squashed like a bug", all the protective gear in the world will
be of no use. Better off avoiding the "bug" scenario.

You're getting a lot of good advice here, but there's a lot more info needed
before you should select your gear. Other factors to consider before
choosing your gear are the length of the rides you're planning, minimum and
max temperatures in your area, and whether or not you plan on riding in the
rain, or when there's a chance of rain. If temps get very high (over 90), or
very low( below 50), you'll need additional gear to what you might wear most
of the time. There's no such thing as being " a little bit cold". Touring
gear is different from commuting gear. A lot of modern riding suits have zip
in Gore-tex liners that can keep you bone dry in the rain, and do a great
job of cutting wind and cold . With liners out they'll serve you well in
temps up to about 85. Best advice is to do your homework, and buy good
quality and proper function the first time, rather than going half way. Even
cheap gear isnt all that cheap, especially if you have to go right back out
    and replace it........Howard
