  3. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
NiCd batteries have been used for decades on such items as standby
generators (as an option and at a price), and with the appropriate
charger. They're much better at subzero startups [1]. As you say though,
they're a bit larger than the equivalent LA batts.

[1] You can also have heated battery trays, block heaters, etc, which
would make the job of LA batts much easier.

Heh.. maybe you're talking about Li-Po batteries, like most mobiles are
these days. Quite fragile they are too, can't run them down below a
certain voltage, can't discharge them too quickly, can't charge them too
quickly, have a habit of jetting burning hydrogen when upset too much.

Ni-Mh batteries are sensitive to vibrations, you can't charge them as
fast as a Ni-Cd and they fail open circuit, which would be bad in the
middle of a corner for instance.

A modern Ni-Cd would be almost ideal, when connected to a computerized
charging system to take care of the memory effect, which only usually
happens when the cell is discharged to within a small percentage of the
same level over and over. Also, they fail closed circuit, so if one cell
fails, you've still got voltage to run the bike electrics.

  7. Get a tube of Bat-Aid from Halfords. It's done wonders for my bike which
now starts as it should and the van doesn't struggle in quite the way it
    it either.

    £3.29 for 12 tablets.

Got to be worth a shot.

I wouldn't mind, but this battery's covered about 200 yards, so far.

    <checks to see if it's a Ducati battery>

  10. I'll bite. Mine's still on the original battery after over seven years.

Acksherly, I started it up the day before yesterday and ran it up for
15-20 minutes. It hadn't been run for two months and I did stick it on
the charger for a few hours as a precaution, but it fired up, no probs.

I will admit that this surprised as well as pleased me.

    I use a Pro-Peak Prodigy. :p Adjustable charge rate from 100ma to
3000mh, charges all my lead acid batteries ok, and tells me how many Ma
    it's put into the battery.
