That's why I said "excluding booze". That probably sticks another 30
quid a week on the bill.

Open tin. Put contents in bowl. Put in microwave. Heat. Eat.

We're talking spicy pasta-inna-tin. Oooh, and I bought a couple of tins
of beans and sausages in a tin, cause they were BOGOF and I wanted to
see if they tasted any good on toast or in pasta.
Heh. I find about 50% of microwave meals (from Tesco anyway) taste
yeuch. But after working my way through most of them a few years ago, I
got to know what I liked. Still didn't buy many of them.

Dunno about what it's /supposed/ to taste of, but I'd have said it was
    most reminiscent of cheap aftershave.

Can I suggest that you don't carry one on the London Underground? The
    results might be... messy.

: Nah, 1.5 days at Glentress and then up to Fort William for 3 days for
    : the World Cup round.

The red route at Innerleithen/Traquair is also worth a look ... it's
about 5 miles east of Glentress. The final section down Caddon Bank to
    the carpark is superb.

Well, the plan is to do the Glentress red/blue on the Thursday
afternoon (after driving up from Birmingham!) and then the black Helly
    Hansen on Friday.

Given I want to be at Fort Bill reasonable early on Saturday to see
the 4x racing I don't think I'll have time for Innerleithen this time
round. Could swing by there on the Monday but I'm supposed to be
    toddling up Nevis then.

  8. Well yes. I can appreciate my comment was not helpful in the context of
your immediate plight but doing something to rectify your cooking skill
deficiency is still a good idea.

Why don't you want to learn?

It's not at all difficult - the last cookery lessons I had were at
school although I had a lot of practice at home as well which helped.
I'm sure you could master the basics.

  13. Who's the better cook?

    Paul Corfield, Aug 10, 2005
  14. Ah OK. I thought you might be adventurous and cook some vegetables and
then add the tin contents to create a "one pot" reasonably healthy
option. I did that quite a bit as a student and I think it's the fruit
and vegetables that are missing from my diet these days.

It's not. The bulk of those food products are packed with refined sugars
and the like which are just not good for you. We have to watch what Jess
eats without making a big deal of it (she's 13).

I have a pet theory that children are getting fat not because of the
quantity of food they are eating but because the majority of it is highly
    refined.

If the truth be told we have very little packaged/tinned food in the
    house at all.

Briefly opening the cupboard it's just tuna, baked beans, tomatoes and
kidney beans we have in tins with tomato puree in a jar. Cheap tinned
tomatoes always seem a bit anaemic as do own brand baked beans. Tuna is
whatever is the cheapest as we get through a lot of it.

There's nothing else to speak of that's pre-prepared IYSWIM. We get veg
and fruit from local grocers, meat from the butcher and fish from the
boats on the beach. However that's for a number of reasons.
