How is Cycle Gear for basic service?

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by Aram Schiffman, Nov 25, 2005.

  1. I live pretty close to the Pleasanton Cycle Gear. I've had them mount
and balance tires, with no issues, but I've shied away from any other
    sort of maintenance.

I just need sprockets and chain mounted on my VFR. CG sure is
convenient -- any experience pro or con their Service dept?

Thanks, ride safe, and happy Thanksgiving.

How bad could they be to mess up a chain and sprocket change?
But hey...do it yourself. It not difficult.
Support bike on Pit Bull stand ( preferably )
    Remove rear wheel
replace sprocket ( careful on torque settigs)
    replace chain and wheel
    What would you need?
Chain breaker and master link peaning tool) from Motion Pro ( get the
    beefiest one!)
Sockets to fit your rear axle bolts, nuts
Torque wrench, to make sure your nuts correctly torqued.
    and parts of course.,
the first time you do this it will take maybe three hours, next time 1.5
    hours max.

  3. Well... you forget to torque down a bolt, rear wheel comes loose
somewhere on 680 .... I get your point, but an inattentive mechanic can
pretty much negligently kill you a bunch of ways. I just wanted to
check whether they had a major, "stay away" type of reputation.

A friend had car tires put on at Big O. They forgot to tighten the lug
nuts. Luckily they weren't even finger tight and it was obvious on
    inspection. It happens.
I've thought about it. I have a bunch of other work I'm doing (myself)
including new brake fluid (bit of a pain with LBS) and valve adjust....
    can't a guy get one little break? : )

Actually, I might go your route, but I thought I also needed a sprocket
puller? No? So the cost of tools was adding up.

BTW I've been to your web site numerous times - thanks for maintaining
it. Great resource. On that topic, I was going to email you - as you
probably know, Honda of Milpitas is gone, and the same physical space
(and phone #) is Milpitas Motorsports. In case you want to update your
    dealer page.
    Thanks,
    Aram
