I have an SV650 and you cant go more than 100 miles on it with out
needing a full body masage... Its too painful...

I am considering the S2R... does anyone know how it fares on long
    distance travels? Is it comfortable?

Well, I haven't done anything more than 175k per trip on my S2R1k, but I
don't find it uncomfortable at all. Pillions say it vibes a bit, but I don't
really notice. It's a hell of a lot more comfortable than my old GSXR750
(which is one reason I bought it).

I think it'd be fine for longer trips, although you might want to think
about the fact it's got ****-all in the way of tank capacity. Town riding I
get 6.41l/100km out of it, but it's 11+3 so the warning light pops on at
about 180km. Highway I'd expect to get better economy but somehow I doubt
it's going to go a huge distance between stops. So no need to worry about
more than 200km before you get a rest anyway.

I rode the S2R800, vibed a bit differently but the seat was just as good
(nice and padded in the right bits) but I did < 10km on the 800, so I can't
    comment on the smaller S2R.

Hoping to take it on a longer trip soon, but other things seem to get in the
    way.

Mosters are probably a little more comfy than an SV650s and probably
less comfy than the SV650. They have tiny plastic gas tanks so a magnet
bag is out. If you really want to travel, why not move up to the
    Multistrada or ST line?

I have 1 1/2 hour full body massage once a month, whether I need it or
    not.

Jon, 1st off, riding a motorcycle is not like driving a car in terms
of comfort. Some are better than others but you're still stuck out
there with the breeze in your face & a two-cylinder engine vibrating
    between your legs.

I had an SV-650 too for a year and traded it in for a purpose built
long distance sporty bike with cushier suspension, a far smoother,
more power engine and better wind protection, particularly at speeds >
than 80 MPH. But you know what? It's still a motorcycle that is
constantly exposed to the elements, unlike a car.

That said, I rode my SV-650 with a small targa fairing and bungeed on
sleeping bag, tent & other camping crap 600 miles in the summer of
2000 to get away from the Phoenix heat and ride a road with nearly 100
miles of twisties. Shortly after that ride, I bought my current bike,
    a sport tourer.

The SV-650 is a great little bike for around town and moderate
commuting, at a cheap price, which is great for the young and hardy
but it's cheap suspension, lack of wind protection and fairly smooth
"for a two-cylinder engine" is not for the long haul with an old fart
like me. The Ducati SR2 won't be any better, even worse, IMO.

Get something like a used Honda VFR, Sprint ST or one of those new
Yamaha FJR-1300s if you want to travel in style on a sport type
    motorcycle.
