Has your saddle had its 100-hour sniff?

Only, if it hasn't I'm prepared to take care of that for no charge.

    At all.

  3. Consumer durables. White good, computers, electricals, clothes. All are
    much cheaper than they were.

  4. If they're left on standby, and not switched off at the plug or the
    on/off switch, yes.

  5. 400 quid cost. Saving - let's say it uses one-third of the fuel that the
car would use. 100mpg instead of 30mpg, in town. So 100 miles costs £5,
more or less, instead of £15. So on fuel, it pays for itself in 4000
miles, give or take. And that's fuel only, and doesn't count road tax,
    insurance, servicing etc.

And with another 4k on the clock, it'll still be worth more or less what
I paid for it with another 4k on the clock.

6 speed manual. You can only get an auto with the larger engines.
The review won't be very exciting.

    Well, now you mention it...

Can you buff my spokes and twiddle my sprockets as well?

You can order a 2.0D with the dual-clutch robotised manual now.... which
    is the one I want.

I appreciate that the review won't be exciting, it's a Volvo estate, but
a brief run-down of what it's like to live with would be good - 'cos
I'll have to spend 100k miles behind the wheel of whatever I order.

pah - just hoover out the combustion chamber and take a wire brush to
    the heat exchanger

    what else ?

Of course, you could get a combustion analyzer on it etc, but if you
have a nice blue flame, odds are that it's not far off

Gad sir, the tablets have worn off. You're going to need some thermal
    undies.

Yes. Replacements for the GU10 type rated 50w. The LED ones are GU10
240v 2w. So far so good.

I've got all the thermals I need tvm. Global warming is my friend when
it comes to stupid trips on motorbikes.

  13. W124. Annoyingly it doesn't have the 2 extra seats fitted, though it
does have the flaps in place, the forward one of which appears to
serve no purpose other than revealing a space for the other lid to sit
when open. Nice big cubby underneath though.

Bit thirsty, but supremely comfy, and a bargain at £460 with only 127k
and MOTd till next feb. Insurance was only £321 too, for a 23 y/o with
no NCB. The best quote I got for a diesel mondeo estate was £450!

If you compare the *incremental* cost of the mileage in the car with the
*total* cost of ownership of the scooter, the result will be rather
    different,
though the savings in parking fees might help the case for the bike.

Well, it costs me around 12p / mile for diesel, without taking any other
    costs into account.

TOG's scooter will probably cost around 5p / mile for unleaded.

    Still a fair difference.

I always used to be really parsimonious with energy, especially
domestically. Since I've been living with K, the energy bills have
trebled. Lights are left on and the heating's set too high. I've got
into the habit of leaving the computer on when not in use during the
evening because of the appallingly long boot-up and shut-down times.

Commuting is generally by bike but I do use the car on the odd day and
on weekends. Sadly my main bike, a Guzzi Quota, has lost its rather
good 55mpg since a rebuild and only just makes 50mpg now.

My car's a 4x4, partly because I like them but partly because I
actually needed light mud-plugging capability when I bought it. I
don't need it so much now but it's comforting to know that it's there.
I'm not bothered by the car's relatively heavy fuel consumption -
typically 29mpg but has dropped below 24mpg once or twice - because it
doesn't do many miles in a year.

Overall, then, the rising fuel prices have had little effect on me.

  18. <Snip shocking waste of energy>

Only things left on in our house is fridge/freezer, an alarmclock, a
single Sky+ box (for that is how many any household needs) and a puny
slimline DVD player. Both our TVs are fully turned off, as are our
PCs, though if I leave this one on downloading, I fully turn off the
    monitor (big CRT).

Even all our phone/TomTom/Garmin/misc chargers are plugged into an 8
way splitter with its own FOAD power switch on t'end, which is off 99%
    of the time.

We also have a water meter and a brand spanking new combi boiler.

With all this, our electricity bill was £93 for the last quarter, and
    the gas was £83.

Must look at cavity wall insulation costs...
