I'm sure many statisticians who've spent their careers on these
figures will be glad of your vote of confidence.

You have heard the phrase, "lies, damned lies and statistics", haven't
    you?

Indeed, all they serve to show is that the use of 'fewer' as discussed
here is inconsistent with its oppo 'greater'. The latter is only used
when specifically referring to a quantity of something, and is
qualified as such, e.g. a greater number of people. One could,
therefore, suppose that the currently accepted use of fewer is
actually at least as much a misuse as that being criticised here.

Of course, but that (and most other disparaging remarks about stats
and statisticians) is about how the numbers are used, not about
whether they're accurate or not in the first place.

  8. As an Esperanto speaker I confirm that the language is logical,
however can I add that it is also a living language.
Within a short period of 121 years Esperanto is now within the top 100
languages out of 6,000 worldwide according to the CIA factbook. It is
the the 17th most used in Wikipedia and also in use by Skype and
Wikipedia. The Pope used the language recently in his "Urbo et Urbi"
address at Easter, and even the Beijing Olympics has an Esperanto
    translator.

It is true however that ignorance is holding Esperanto back. You might

Sure, and I recall the issue from the 80s myself.

However, it's my perception (which may be wrong) that the inflation
figures have not been intefered with in the same way.

No ta. I prefer the idea of the Fins. Rather than the EU translate
everything into each member's language, just record everything in Latin.

The items in the basket are obviously key, and change over time -
every year or so there's a news story about what's in (e.g. DVD
player) and what's out (e.g. sewing machine). But the basket is set
by the statisticians, not the government.
They've been split into two different figures - RPI & CPI; mortgage
payments is in one, but not the other.

I'm not sure (ICBW, only having speed-read it), but mortgages don't
seem to be included RPI but seem to be as "housing costs" in CPI.

  17. Absolutely. Our pay rise this year (as part of our 3 year deal) was
February RPI + 0.6%. Just been announced we're getting 4.7%. Needless
to say, we're fairly happy bunnies.
