How fast was your FS1E - Memory Lane

I know mine did an indicated 46 ish, flat out with little wind on the
flat. I could coax 51 - 55mph, downhill, on a chilly day prone.

I have a friend that swears he got an indicated 60 out of his - I say
this is just wishful thinking/memory lane playing up.

Were the Suzuki ap50 _that_ much faster ?

Also, I didn't know there were 60cc "big bore" kits available !

I'd say an indicated 55-60 hurtling down Gatton Bottom[1] near
Reigate. It's so long ago, I cant really remember TBH.

    [1] Hur hur.

Hmm, can't really remember, but I guess mid to high forties towards
the bottom a gradual, two-ish mile long dual carriageway seems about
    right.
Well, my mates AP50 was faster 'cos it was red. My Fizzy was blue.

'cept that mine was post 1977 (was that the year the 30mph restriction came
in? I think so), but that was OK cos there was always somebody around who
knew how to do summat greasy and tweak a few extra mph out of your
gatepost-on-wheels. We had TS50ER's too, they were surprisingly quick for
little putt-putts, and loads of fun off road :) (Well to be honest, if
officer plod had ever found my somewhat worse for wear TS on the road he'd
have thrown the ruddy book at me and quite right too, it was shall we say
Was that the twin pot jobbie?
Nor did I... but Rumour Control had it that you could drop a YB-100 engine
and gearbox into a fizzie no worries, legend has it that the mountings were
identical. Not that I ever knew anyone who tried it mind.

Faster than mine - a 1972 model - resprayed in black which should have
counted for a few mph but clearly didn't. 45 on the flat in neutral
conditions, 50 down a steep hill (and thoughts of seizing were not far
from my mind!). Mind you it was 7 years old at the time!

Never had a fizza, but I'll reminisce anyway.

I waited 'till I was 17[1] and got a DT100. Good for about 70mph. It
seized on me at that speed once. too. My old man was following on his
RS1000 so we just waited for it to cool down and it was as right as
    rain after that.

    [1] I'd been riding a *gnarled-up* Suzuki K80 since I was 11.
Fantastic bike. 32 (IIRC) tooth rear sprocket. Weelied like **** and
top speed was around 30 but it was *my* motorbike. My dad spent weeks
converting from a roadie. All he used was a lump hammer, a hacksaw[2]
and a pot of Magnolia gloss.

    [2] We're talking pre-angle grinder days here.

Nope, not really, but I thought they handled better, for varying values
    of handled.

52mph flat out, lying on the tank, both feet on the rack, on a
clear flat road with no wind.
    Speedo badly out maybe?
Quite a bit faster in this "class" of bike.. The yellow 50cc
Garelli (Fantic?) was the quickest I ever saw.

MY Brother had a purple fs1e and his did 50.
My one ( a later model) did about 40.

I think they may have 'de-tuned' them slightly.
Maybe a 'moped' doing 50 was a bit too unmopedy.
Purple older fizzys were considered the ones to get if you could.

Gold one (Obviously a better model colour!)
Weekly "decoke" and I skimmed the head by a HUUUGE 10 thou at work.
Polished the exhaust port like a mirror.

    29.9mph standard '79 FS1M, 16th birthday and only 3800mls.

45 (ish) with an unrestricted (wider downpipe) exhaust.

55+ with one of the original (from his garden shed @ £15) Micron Bean Can.

65+ with transfer + exhaust port work (like 75% of the bore) with a little
longer opening on the disc valve. Many thanks to Ron Haslam.

Seem to recall one in South Africa got to 120mph !

Had to sell it when I turned 19 with 45000 mls on it.

Do you reckon they'll fetch £millions when we're all gwowed up with the
spare cash to buy back our childhood?

    <snip>

A young hero in our village allegedly got 70mph out of his Garelli Tiger.
Seems it exploded in his dad's garage next day when he started it.

Never saw any actual proof of this, but it was a local legend spoken about
in reverend hushed tones at gatherings of the village moped-isti.
