How fast does Darwin work?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Sean Hamerton, Feb 7, 2008.

  1. I ask because a person I know, I won't call him a friend, currently
riding a CBR125 on which he's managed less than 2000 miles on since
May 2006. He's recently passed his DAS at the age of 21, and seems to
think getting a brand new R6 in May, once he's fleeced his dad for the
    deposit, is a good idea.

Furthermore, when I suggested he get something sensible - something
UKRM would recommend - he claimed that a brand new R6 is the only bike
he'll be able to get on with, as 'when you've wanted something for so
long, you just know it's going to be right'.

As an aside, he's currently using NCB he gathered from his 2 years on
a 50cc scooter to insure his CBR, which is fair enough, but should
insurance companies really accept this on a policy for what is
essentially a track bike with lights and a plate?

    What say you?

About 20 years ago, I know a bloke that passed his test on a 125 and
immediately stepped to a 750 Turbo.

And as my chap went on to survive many years incident free, statistics
suggests that your chap will meet his maker before the end of the street

    It's only a 600.
In America an R1 is the usual learners' bike. :)

  5. I hope he does get it actually, as then me and matie over the road
(+Thundercat) can take him to some good local roads he won't be able
to manage and **** off while he wobbles about at 30mph.

This guy doesn't even take his CBR on the twisites, where it should
shine, but instead takes it up the A23 for a bit. That's his idea of a
    ride-out...

  7. Cheeky sod.

I've only crashed (properly) once, and that was after more than 10000
    miles of good(ish) riding.

This chap got SMIDSY'd overtaking a car turning into a side street
after about 600 miles on his CBR - got impatient and the car wasn't
indicating, looking for the correct turning.

Well, I went from MZ 250 to BMW 100 RT aged 21 and lived to tell the
tale. Not quite the same but there is some equivalence. Stop worrying
about other people is my advice.

Ah, happy days. Big bank loan, big bike, visits to A&E, drink riding,
punching holes in most of the hedges in Shropshire.

*sniff* Brings back many happy memories.

He's absolutely correct, let him get on with it you old fart and let
    the mayhem begin.

I went from 250LC to R80ST at age 21 and the performance was about the
    same

  11. Old! I'm a mere lad of 23 myself! Albeit a rather more mature one that
    the chap I describe.

I'm sure he'll be fine, once he gets used to the extra 110bhp...

Well, there are a few milestones[1]. The first mile, the first 10 miles,
1000 miles. After that it'll be a piece of piss.

[1] Completely unscientific and just made up by me - but seems to be
    about right.

Ah, indeed... I recall following a friend back from a disco at Sandhurst
Village Hall, him on a Tiger Cub, me on a Honda 125, tearing along the
country lane. We were both slightly tipsy and I'd forgotten to turn my
lights on. There was plenty of light pouring out of the front of the Tiger
Cub so I didn't really notice that there was none coming out of mine. Then
a fuse died and suddenly everything went very dark indeed. I just about
managed to stop without too much drama but he went on a little further and
it took me a while to find the exact spot where he had demolished a section
of hedge and gone arse over tit into a ploughed field.

    Yes, happy memories...

Fuxsake, dump the Fazer, buy a sports bike, get out there and start
acting your bloody age then. You should be ashamed of yourself.

  19. Money currently dictates that I run the fazer until it dies. I wish I
    hadn't bought a house sometimes...
