How do disk brakes work?

    Disk brakes.
    Squeeze the lever, fluid, slave cylinder mashes the pads against the
    rotor. That part I understand.
    What I don't understand is what happens when you release the lever.
    Cylinder on one side only. So when I release the pressure, the whole
    assembly has to move to one side while the cylinder retracts twice that
    amount. There ain't no obvious spring. What's the mechanism that
    makes it let go?
