How come...

  1. .... the slight leak from the oil sump didn't show up until the exhausts
and radiator were back on? Eh? Eh? Answer me that.

I propose to ignore it and hope it goes away.

Either that or fit "Norton" badges.

First corner after a longish straight bit should be interesting :)

It's the BlingMobile. Corners are *always* interesting.

I told you to reuse the old gasket, but would you listen?
A proper and well-considered maintenance strategy.
Good plan - apoplex any traditionalists you encounter by telling them that,
in the eighties, the American owners of the Norton name were rebadging
Voyagers as Nortons for the US market. Then go off on one about how the
Norton name has been passed around so much that the Blingmobile is as
legitimate a Norton as anything produced in Bracebridge Street...

  6. Same reason I managed to fix the slight oil leak from the cam end rubber on
my GS only to create one on the front big enough to cover the engine and my
leg in oil after 20 miles. Hermatite instant gasket my arse.

I would, but you can't get to most of them with the exhausts fitted, and
to remove the exhausts I'd have to remove the radiator. Again.

So I'll see how things go.

Of course, almost certainly number 3 or 4 exhaust gaskets will be
blowing anyway, so then I'll *have* to remove the radiator. Again.

If the sump leak's not too bad I'll live with it at least until the next
    oil change.

Changing the subject wildly, I was chatting to the tame spanna-wanka in
Colin Collins today about "stuff", and we got talking about the VTEC
VFR. It seems you actually have to remove the camshafts just to check
the valve clearances! How fucked-up is *that*?

Ah, but I didn't use any Hermetite. Just a new gasket, greased.

  9. It's late and I've just realised what I typed, I didn't mean "hermatite
instant gasket my arse" in a literal sense - that would be a bad thing.
Possibly. Nope, on second thoughts, definitely.

    Take out camshaft.
    Put on bench.
Check valve clearance: 53,736 thou or 1364.89mm.
    Look for very thick shim.

  12. It may be related, but I've seen relatively few of the VTEC VFRs on the
road. I think the VTEC is unnecessary on this bike, but I'd like to ride
one in order to make a reasoned judgement.

The main reason why I'd never buy one, though, whereas I often thought
about buying an older VFR800 and especially 750, is because the damn
    thing has camchains.

The old gear drive bikes were, IMHO, really special because of the
purity and quality of that engineering. Now that's gone, and it's just
    another Honda.

My Zephyr doesn't seem to have exhaust gaskets. Is this right, or a cock

  16. It would be unusual. Are you sure the old gaskets aren't so compressed
in place they look like part of the mating surface?

Oh arse. You are, of course, quite right. I really, really, really
    should have.

**** it. I'll take them off again and get some new gaskets. I'll sort
the oil leak at the same time. If a jobs worth bodging, it's worth
    bodging well.

Have you ever thought of yourself as a Jiminy Cricket type character
before? You're very good at it.

  19. Possibly the PO replaced the gaskets with some Firegum or other
heat-resistant shite which had just burned away.
