Recommendations? Within 30 mins of Calais[1], cheap & with a bar would
    be good.

    [1] <pre-emptive strike mode>

In France. On the A26 if more than a few mins from the chunnel terminal.

Ibis Coquelles very close to the tunnel terminal. Etap next door cheaper
    but no bar.

Down the A26, Saint Omer[1] is about 50km. Ibis & others in a fairly nice
town setting, rather than the shopping complex at Coquelles.

As ever, book via Quidco for a discount

[1] you need to put the full name in some search boxes. Make sure it
selects the one in Nord Pays de Calais

But no bar, & grey leader ruled out Formule 1's (& I didn't argue).

The John Bull 'pub' in the Cite Europe just across the road from the
Etap isn't as bad as it sounds, and they have Guinness. Probably don't
stay open long enough for Champ though.

  9. Don't stay open long enough for Champ... I suspect they do.

  10. Odd, I've prefered these to other cheaper hotels.

    Maybe it's because I'm a skinflint.

He was quite the late-night drinker on Thursday, so was making some
    interesting noises on Friday morning.

Well obviously, the fast group goes out before the slow group.

Presume you were lucky with the extra session at the end - we were
pretty much loaded up by the time they announced it.

It was a bit nippy, wasn't it. The Saturday was even colder - bright
blue skies but well and truly brass monkeys.

I took a scenic route home from Bedford and then put some fresh(er) pads
in the gixer. Easy. Then removed and refitted the front indicator that
popped out when it was loaded into the van on Wednesday. I must be
missing a trick because something as simple as taking off an indicator
was a total, total **** of a job and took me the thick end of an hour
    and a lot of swearing.
