In the days of floppy disks and magentic media I'd agree that making a
backup copy was not only a good idea but frequently critical. The amount of
failures I had with those stupid disks was unreal.

However, I have _never_ had a CD stop working through normal use. Even one
I kept in the garage for 6 months, on the floor, with a motorbike on it,
still managed to play in my discman.

Therefore I would ask do you really need to make a copy of a DVD for
    personal use? Honestly?

And IME making tapes of CD's was so you could play them in the car or on a
walkman if you were a pikey who couldn't afford a decent radio/cd player.

Unfortunately, when I started buying music recordings the popular medium
of the day didn't play too well in cars.

    Mmmm, 8 track ...

    My AOL disk worked fine[1]

Which is why I copy original CDs onto Minidisc for the car.
Is this (or going to be) illegal?

Pre-recorded ones maybe, but the CDRs you buy are very much less robust,
and reports I've read have suggested very low data reliability - like
    2-3 years.
    Not an original, no.
Exactly. Thanks for calling me a pikey!

  13. No idea, I succumbed and bought my first DVD player 3 months ago. At
the moment we only have a few DVDs how robust they'll be time will
tell but they are unlikely to be stolen from a vehicle

That's not quite what I meant. There are certainly things you could use
in an illegal way, but it's the things that are simply illegal to use
    that get me.

Yes, even the original CDs were starting to fail at 7 years, I have seen
some audio ones become unplayable. Data could be more critical.

A few years ago I was working for a company selling very large (1Tb+)
    optical storage systems.

The guff from the manufacturers was that optical disks had a working life of
30+ year, but we had plenty of reports of them failing within 5.
