Well, that's the 2005/6 tax return submitted and it looks like they owe
me six hundred quid, which is nice.

I have to ask why I prevaricate so much when it's a simple task that
    only takes an hour.

    Still, done now.

  2. I do that. Prevaricate, I mean. I also check back against the last one,
which is how I discovered that on last year's, I'd got a figure wrong. So,
they owed me another five hundred quid. Which they then paid me. Very
    pleasing.

Is this you being a smug cock again?)

I sent my cheque off earlier in the week - just over ukp6800.

They do owe me about ukp700 through other routes, though, but I won't
get that back until after the end of this tax year.

I prevaricate, troo, but evidently not as much as you. And I throw it
    all at the accountant anyway.

Dunno why, really, as it's simple enough to do, but working out how
much I've got to pay the taxman is something I hate doing, so I just
let the abacus-man come up with a final figure.

Eh? Makes no difference if you do it online. The only difference it
makes is that you get the option to pay tax you owe through next year's
code (which I didn't expect to apply to me since my expenses exceeded my
dividends and what-not; but not by as much as I'd expected...

    TOG@toil, ,
Well, with the online thing it's a piece of cake really. The guides are
pretty good, I've even managed to work out how to apply taper relief
    using them in the past.

  9. Careful, when the tax man *owed me* over £4,000 he sent threatening
letters about the bailiffs coming around to collect it.

Well if you're paid enough to take you above the 20% tax band then you
probably owe tax on any UK investment returns.

Once upon a time everyone in the higher tax rate got to fill in a tax
return. I think they simplified this some time ago.

  14. For fear of being whooshed but TfL take make off my pay. Doesn't stop me
having to complete a return in respect of my total income and the fact
that I owe HMG more money as a result of having to pay 40% on interest
on savings. Yes my tax code changes to allow it to be collected but I
still have to do the form (the simplified one now). I never have any
work related expenses or mileage so none of that comes into play.

    Institution fees?

  16. Yes I'm sure someone would pay money to get me put away in an
    institution ;-)

Seriously I'm not a member of any professional body. The closest I
could get to is the Chartered Institute of Transport but they changed
the rules years ago which prevented me from joining then and I haven't
    been bothered since.

  17. Ah. Do you a) not pay higher rate tax? b) make pension contributions or c)
    do any business mileage?

  19. They keep writing to me and saying I don't need to do a tax return. I keep
telling them I do. They always owe me money.
