heh. But, to be fair, you can't buy much of a shed for 10 quid. You
may be pleased to know that the Beetle is Jeremy Clarkson's all time
worst car (even beats the Allegro into 2nd place).

  2. I rather liked the Allegro I had - Estate it was. Bloke I worked with
gave it to me as the AA had told him the big-ends had gone. I adjusted
the points and did 25k miles in it. It would prolly still be going now
if I'd had the forsight to lift the bonnet and check the oil at least
    once during that time.

I've been listening to old recordings of family life that have been
transferred onto CD and on one there's my mum's old Allegro having to
have a push start on Xmas day 1980. It sounds awful. What puzzles me
is knowing how shit it was she still went on to buy a brand spanking
new Allegro estate the next year. In fact thinking back every single
car she's owned has been shit. She even had an FSO at one point FFS.

Mine's been perfectly reliable, as have all 10 of our company Golf
SDIs. Every one of them has now been caned for over 50K miles in the
hands of a sales rep or two, and not one of them has broken down or
    given any serious problems.

Passat TDIs next, from what I'm told.

  5. Lozzo, I love you like a brother, but please tell me you're not really
    keen on shitty old VW's?

I love anything that gives me the ability to get on and do my job
properly, without interuption. When I'm not working I'm not earning.

We don't have shitty old VWs, all ours are on 03 plates. We'll be
    getting 05 plate ones next.

  7. I'm sure they are very capable and reliable. They're just not
/interesting/ as cars. If they'd given you 1960's Wartburgs that would
    have been fascinating.

Admittedly, you probably wouldn't get a lot of work done.

Cars don't really interest me. My company car is just another tool I
    use to do my job.
I'd spend all day at home porting it and welding up expansion chambers.
Those things can be made to really fly. Terry Beckett tuned one back in
    the 80s.

  9. I had one for a couple of weeks once. Nice touch was the freewheel -
    until the brakes went.

Wartburgs sound like an ideal cage for some round here. 30,000 mile
service interval and warm in the winter. :) I'd imagine that a tuned one
    wouldn't last 30,000 miles though.

    I'm hijacking this thread!

I've found somebody who is privately breaking a non-quattro Audi 100 Avant.
I'm meeting him in Milton Keynes tomorrow to lift some stuff from it, but
can you car-people think of anything I don't need now which might come in
handy in the future. Window motors have already gone and he wants 250 quid
for the wheels (because they've got fairly new tyres on), but I have got a
pair of boot struts and two new fag lighters.

Anything else you think I should nab while I can? Whatever I go for has to
be able to fit into the back of an Audi TT, which means I'm probably pushing
my luck with the boot struts and the fag lighters.

    AndrewR says...
250 quid, bloody hell, my Audi 100 fetched 70 quid in auction complete
with 5 alloy wheels and reasonable tyres.
Door mirrors, they cost a fucking fortune from Audi.

Yeah. As his engine is no good to me (because it's a 2 litre), the rest of
the mechanical gubbins aren't quattro and I can't fit a new driver's seat
into an Audi TT I'll probably just leave it as is.
