Honda VTR1000 electrics

    Hi all,

    After riding my bike for 8,000kms over the last 4 months, I rode home
    from work like I normally do. Got home, switched off the bike, opened
    up the garage, switched the bike back on and pressed the starter button
    to put the bike away.

    CLICK

    A loudish click sound, not a bang, happened and all electrics on the
    bike died. Bugga..

    Any ideas what it might be? I'm think, and hoping, it's just a fuse.
    Where about's are these? What kind of fuse do I need? Are they easy to
    replace?

    The fuses are under the seat in a small box just near the battery (mounted near a subframe cross brace). The box has a simple
    push-in clip to hold the lid down.

    Even if it is a fuse blown, I'd be concerned as to what caused it to blow. Try asking the guys at www.ozfirestorm.com and see if any
    of them have had this happen to them.

  3. First things first, check the battery terminals are done up tight (that
    was the weird sounding problem my girlfriend had with my Spada the other
    night).

    battery earth? Probably where it connects to the engine or frame, but it
    might be a loose or corroded terminal. There's not many things that will
    affect the whole electrical system.

    Helpful Workshop Hint. When futzing with positive battery terminals,
    first remove the lead from the negative terminal completely, then work
    on the positive lead, then replace the negative lead.

    This will avoid any risk of welding your spanner to the frame.

    If it was another vehicle I'd say it's a loose/dirty battery-cable.....
    but seeing as it's a Honda I'd say you're up for a new regulator,
    rectifier, stator and the shame of Hatzola's scorn!

    Most bikes I've owned seemed to have their accessory fuses in an easy to
    get to locations, and the main fuse in another location, maybe close,
    but might require removal of some bodywork, so if a blown fuse is your
    problem you might need to look a bit harder to find the culprit than
    just the obvious.

    Actually battery earth or neg battery terminal can be a problem.
    Happened to the spud.
    One moment all was fine the next it wouldnt start and just go click.
    then it would start again but i had to ride with the headlight off.
    Took it to Pablos when they were in Richmond, guy tightened the neg
    battery terminal, problem solved.
