Honda VF1000F timing?

I was approached by a young rider last week, who is trying to set his timing
on his '84 Honda VF1000F Interceptor.

He says he is setting the rear cylinders based on the 'TR' marks, and the
front cylinders based on the 'TF' marks, both based @ TDC. The bike will
fire and run for a short period, but that (his words) "the front cam gear
    gets sheared off the cam".

I haven't seen the bike... I just happened to be hanging out at a local show
'n shine when he came up to me.

Does anyone have a decent online technical resource that I can point him to?
He says he's already tried the VFRDiscussion Forum...

    TIA.

done that... sorry I hadn't mentioned in 1st post. Also, he says he has the
Clymer or Haynes already, but they don't say where to position the crank...
again, his words, not mine. I haven't seen the bike and have no
association. Just trying to help a guy out...

I also got the impression that he's spent a pile of money on beautification,
    and not sound mechanicals...

  4. Every manual I have ever seen tells you how to position the crank for
timing. My guess is he hasn't read the manual(s) properly. Or can't
    understand them. Or can't read.

Forget it. Let him fight his own battles.
