Honda spare parts?

  1. Looks like the Viffer has the dreaded fried regulator/rectifier and I would
    need to get a replacement.

Is my only option to buy a Honda replacement from Honda dealers at $300+?
Or is there an alternative item/place that would save a few dollars?

  2. Contact Jack @ CAE (City Auto Electrics) in Coburg (03)93506677 for one of his
beefier and modded reg/recs for your VFR.

I got him to install mine, but if you're not in Melbourne I'm pretty sure he
    does mailorder.

    Good luck

Before you go and do that, I had what I thought was a dead
rectifier/regulator on my honda a while ago, the more I revved the
engine, the dimmer the headlight. We measured it and the harder it
    revved, the lower the voltage

    however...

turned out to be the battery! The R/R acts in a strange way. If the
battery cant muster sufficient charge , the R/R actually reduces the
voltage. I dont understand electronics that well unfortunatley. New
    battery and all was well!

I'd hate for you to spend lots of $$$ for no reason. try a
replacement battery or at least hooking it up to another bike with
    jumper leads.

If it is the R/R try a bike wrecker, they often stock non genuine new
parts a lot cheaper than honda's brand name ones.

  4. Thanks TM, $200 + postage - sure beats $300+!

The discrepancy in pricing amazes me. I bought a new battery from battery
dealer for $60. Honda dealers wanted $120.

  5. I've done that... Had a nice 2 hour ride into the country with new battery
installed, only to have the bike stall and flat battery at the first traffic
light. A new battery gives a dangerous false sense of security.

The discrepancy in pricing amazes me too. I can get a new Holden for $37,000
but the Ferrari dealer wanted $370,000 for the car in his showroom.

Got to a library, find the section with the economics books, find a reasonably
thick one and read the chapters on "supply and demand" and "economies of
scale"... and any others you find interesting.

    Heya

I suggest you go and check out the forms etc at http://www.ozvfr.net/ first
for some reading information. From my previous scanning the VFR's are
notorious for the regs overheating and hence clapping out. If it is fried go
an aftermarket option (around $150) and then you can also fit a small
heatsink and fan set up similar to that used on power supplies or computer
chips (depending on the mating surfaces etc). I'm sure there is some VFR
tech heads in here that have all the gory details. I've searched on VFR's
before on the net and found various links to the reg/rect problems and
solutions to solve the heat/failure problem.

$65 for a used r/r at the wreckers versus $450 from ducati
where do you think batteries come from

go and price bearings and see even more of a difference

    eliminate the middle man
