Honda Nighthawk 750 Carburetor Malfunction

    I had an experience with my 1993 Nighthawk 750 where apparently one
    (or more) of the carburetor float valves stuck down (open). The
    engine flooded and would not start. The dealer offered to rebuild the
    carbs for +/- $450. No assurances the problem would be fixed.

    It has happened several times since. Recently someone told me to tap
    the carbs firmly with a rock. I did that, and it works!
    Unfortunately I don't look too suave in front of Starbuck's beating on
    my motorcycle engine with a rock (I now carry one with me).

    This sounds like a design flaw to me.

    Does anyone have repair/correction experience or ideas?

  2. Remove the carb bank. This can take time! Invert. Remove each float bowl
    (usually held on with four screws apiece).

    Check float heights (see manual). Ensure all floats move freely without
    binding. Replace float bowls. Replace carbs bank. Job done.

    For a sticking float, there is absolutely no need to rebuild the carbs,
    so your dealer is pulling your plonker.

    (writing that down)...
    The last two times I put everything back together and put on my tank,
    gas started dripping out of the overflow tubes onto the floor. I
    found that making a fist and hitting the side of the offending carb a
    couple of times w/ the bottom of my fist (ie: not the side w/ nuckles
    ;) unstuck the float. Nothing extra to carry if it works :)
    Along the fixing stuff lines... I thought I was gonna get a crotch
    rocket after I learn to ride on this kz I'm rebuilding... but now I
    wonder if I shouldn't just buy some cheap broken motorcycle and fix it
    up too. It's been so much fun....
