Honda CB125 RS - clutch? problems

  1. hi Everyone - hope someone here can help me out with the old RS, it's
starting to get to the stage where I'm going to have to either hit it with a
sledge hammer, or set fire to it...

Currently in the process of rebuilding the engine (again) to try and get it
sounding as it would when it left Honda, almost there, but I now have what I
can only describe as a rumbling / knocking noise eminating from within the
    bowels.

Here's a quick list of what's been replaced (with brand-new genuine Honda
parts); conrod, big-end, crankpin, main bearings, gearbox bearings, gudgeon
pin, piston kit, camchain + tensioner + guide + top and bottom sprockets,
camshaft + bush, rocker shafts, rocker arms, atu.

Top end of motor now sounds sweet, but the 'rumbling' seems to be gearbox
related - there's no play in either big-end or mains, but I've notice that
the gearbox mainshaft can be moved up and down (surely not right? - it runs
inside the sleeve that mounts the clutch basket). Also, - and this is where
I'm starting to get lost - when the clutch is fully assembled, the clutch
outer (basket) is not a tight fit against either the mainshaft bearing (on
its inner face) or the rest of the clutch components on its outer face -
should it be like this? I've had several of these bikes before but simply
    can't remember.

All the gears, clutch etc work fine, but this damn noise is driving me to
distraction, does anyone else think I'm heading in the right direction, or
    simply for a nervous breakdown??

    Cheers,

    Rick

  2. This is the problem, I think.
