I picked up a 1970 CT70 beater bike last year for $100. I am finally
getting around to fixing its excessive smoking and leakage of oil. Upon
disassembly, it was apparent that the previous *mechanic* (probably some
10 year old) didn't have a clue. He used RTV for every top end gasket
(except the head gasket - although it was smeared with RTV) The base
gasket was even made out of the carboard packaging that the RTV came in!
Amazingly, the bike ran well! Anyhow, it appears the smoking is due to
the head having only an inner valve seal on the exhaust valve. The
intake valve had no seal at all. The valve seal appears to be held in
place with a sheetmetal cap that goes over the the valve guide. Does
anyone know how to remove this cap?

    Thanks,

Go buy a manual before you do anything. It will be well worth it.

I have a Clymer Manual but it gives no information on this subject.
    Thanks for the help.

    Rob,
having never opened a CT70 engine I can only speculate, but if it's
anything like the valve seals in a Mazda V-6, the sheet metal cap you're
seeing is part of the seal. A pair of pliers can be used to peel if off in
pieces. A new one needs a special tool to drive it on a certain distance.
