Hockenheim

  1. Anyone had experience of riding into Hockenheim?

Want to take the missus to the FIA top fuel drag race on the 20-22 Aug 04.

A quick Autoroute lists it as a 620 mile 1 day ride from Notts/Derbys
sailing Dover to Calais, which I reckon I'll need to split into 2 days.

Anyone have experience of a better (faster) route with an overnight stop
    recommendation?

P.S. Is the Goiman A61one of those 150mph autobahn thingies?
    Can't wait, 2 up with tent & bags :)

Bandit Frenzy was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
AFAIR this is the shortest route - one of my aunts doesn't live too
far from there and it's something like 500-550 miles from London...

From memory (can't be arsed to dig out a map atm) the two options
you've got are either Calais-Belgium-Germany via Aachen and then down
the A61, or going south through Belgium, Luxemburg and hit the German
motorway that way, somewhere near Saarbruecken IIRC. The latter route
is shorter but not motorway all the way. However the motorways down
there aren't quite as full as on the other route. I tend to use the
    latter..

You can do Calais-Hockenheim in a day without any problem if you're
used to long-distance driving/riding and you're hitting the road early
enough, but I wouldn't do it on a bike with a pillion as the first
    long trip...
Only parts of it, AFAIR large parts of it have a 130kph/80mph speed
    limit.

  3. Not my first long trip, but I certainly don't fancy the 400 miles run from
Calais 2 up & fully loaded. I may overnight in/around Cologne.

Oh dear, out comes the chain grease again.

    Many thanks . . . most helpfull.
