I have already made the greatest contribution to the fight against climate
change that I can make: I have decided not to breed. Now quit bugging me and
go and talk to the Catholics.

heh, I was reading a white paper on virtualisation the other day, it
talked about a growing requirement for the convergence of skills, so
now Sysadmins need to be triple skilled in OS, Storage and Networks.
Well there goes my specialisation then ;)

Heh, the problem is, in the corporates I work, those functions are
    still heavily silo'd.

I'm multi-skilled, but nowhere near the level of a SME in certain
    areas ..

We're finding it fairly tricky to hire people to fill our rather hands-
on TA role. Multi-skilled, cross-platform and able to do the soft-skills
stuff in a suit as well.

Does my ego no end of good, of course.

isn't that 'cos you're paying peanuts though?

I mean, I could do it standing on my head, but I "don't get out of bed
    for that money"

I think that may well be part of it, yeah. The rate we pay for a role
billed as a TA is somewhat lower than average, though it does have the
benefit of being a fairly decent firm to work for. And we're not laying
people off - all things are relative.

Well, of course not. You're a dole monkey now. You don't get out of bed
    at all.

Yeah, I went for a role the other day, where I had the right levels
and mix of OS, Infrastructure Management, Project Management and Soft
skills, but missed out as I don 't have any SQL or DBA work on my CV.

Fucks sake, these people want everything *and* are offering shite
    money.
    heh. You will.

The problem with Virtualisation, is that it covers a multitude of sins.
We have had Virtual networks/tapes/disks for a while.

Virtual OSes have been around in varying guises for years (E10k for
instance) and obviously IBM had done it for a long time. Now we have
even more choices with Xen and VMware and of course Vbox. In the
hardware arena (for Sun) along came LDoms.... and we all realised how
good the 25k really was. With S10 we got zones, and they are having
    functionality added all the time.

I'll stick with my Hardware and OS virtualisation. Let the admins keep
    the SANs
