I was wondering about one for the 'bent because if you stop in a high
gear (such as an emergency stop) you can change to a low gear at a
standstill. But when I last looked a Rohloff was $14k.
But it wouldn't fit in the pushbike hub...

    Well, at
    http://shop.cheekytransport.com.au/store/listCategoriesAndProducts.shop?idCategory=5
they say two grand, and that includes (I think) lacing it into a wheel.

Probably would be a good thing for a bent.

You should not ride when you are on Grass!

My mum did her shopping on such a bike in a skirt. I don't recall my mother
ever not wearing a skirt or dress.

    I'm curious.

What exactly is the advantage of internal hub gearing as opposed to
    external deraileur (sp?) style ?

    JL
    (should I take this to aus.bicycle ?)

Maintenance - don't need adjusting as much, or cleaning.

Ease of use - just work

Ease of use - don't need to be pedalling to change, so can change at a
    standstill.

    Longer lasting.
    Probably!

You can change gears whilst stationary, less wear on components as the
gearbox is fully enclosed. the deraileur style has a number of ratio
problems as the span between each gear is not constant, the internal 14 gear
hub has a constant step between each ratio.

****! No I realise I don't know how to ride a pushy either!!
[off to the Shimano shop] I don't need the hub thingy but the wee-controller
would let me sleep far better!
    Been there; tried that; failed!
No2 was always the killer; women ('cause blokes all learnt when they were
kids) never got past the first crash in my experience.

So long as your beer-fetching hands are still attached I don't think that'll
be much of a problem Betty.

    You are right, Clem.

When I think about it, it was my not knowing how to walk that got me
banned from making cider at home.

No, what really happens is that when blokes fall over, they think, Ouch,
that hurt, but the thought only last for about 12 seconds, then they
    think about sex.....

I only paid $2K for my 'best' road bike. Steel frame and no suspension, back
    in 87.
