Hello again, I have an update for the sake of the archives, but I can't edit
the original thread as it's a few months old:
    http://groups.google.com/group/uk.r...0d584a20c4a?lnk=st&q=&rnum=4#009e40d584a20c4a

Basically, my output shaft bearing destroyed itself because I overtightened
the chain and to avoid an engine change I did an in-situ "remove the old one
and put in a new one with glue".

I've just got round to completing the job - on my last update I was stuck on
getting the retaining ring out, and eventually I had to just grind it away.
The new bearing went in very satisfactorily, nice and tight, and with plenty
of Loctite 603 on it (apparently more permanent than 638).

The old bearing had sent slivers of metal in to the old oil and some
grinding dust may have crept into the gearbox area so I filled the crankcase
with diesel twice, then ran it for 10 mins with cheap oil in, then replaced
the filter and put in new oil. I've been out for a half hour blast and all
    seems perfect.

Many many thanks to (among others) Champ, Hog, The Older Gentleman and
especially Andy Bonwick (you are a star!), who gave invaluable advice.

No thanks at all to "Ken" who after a pleasent first post was abusive and
sceptical of all who were suggesting that this was possible. Remember, not
everyone wants to do things by the book the expensive way.

I'm glad it all seems to have gone well. Congratulations on becoming a
    mechanical anarchist.
I didn't really see any point in what he was trying to do because he
was right in saying the engine should be stripped but that was no
reason not to try alternatives before giving in to the more expensive
    option.

Actually I was just trying to offer evidence that I couldn't have been
anywhere near if someone has topped the **** and put him in a bridge.
