Hmm bandit issues.... (pagain Pixies and Electricians))

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Doesnotcompute, Mar 7, 2004.

  1. 1) do we have any auto electricians in the house? if so - drop us an
email or reply here if you'd be up for doing some stuff for
    cash/beer/favours.

    2) judging by the shinyness of my left boot[1] - it appears I'm leaking
a little oil :/ Further inspection suggests LHS crank case cover.
Hopefully just a gasket, but I have no idea. Is this something that Chez
Pixies could advise on before I get myself ripped off at a dealer?

On a good note, I fitted new headlights yesterday and they seem to work
and I went out for a blast today after the roads had dried off, which
was lovely. My word it's quick.

[1] new Sidi Raptor Evo's in black. Very nice uberboots. Going to take a
little getting used to riding in them tho.

    There may lie your problem.[snip]
If it is the LHS C-case gasket it will be a doddle. check the drive
sprocket oil seal and the clutch actuator oil seal as well, both are
relatively easy to renew however they do require the removal of the
    drive sprocket.

Also have a squint at the oil cooler, pipes and filter for leaks. The
oil cooler pipes are prone to corrode at the union with the cooler.

  3. Not in this case. Whilst I ain't no leccy, removing one unit and
replacing with an identical (but not broken) unit I can do.

Rigging wiring looms to take LED's instead of bulbs etc, however, I cannot.

Excellent. But I'm not qualified to state that /is/ the issue. Just my
    guess that's what's up.
    whooosh.

Now you see why I posted.

  4. WTF?

Bad form and all - but I've just spotted the poor subject line.

Also, due to engine vibration, the standard oil cooler guard can eat
through the oil cooler in time. It's the right hand timing cover that
tends to leak if not replaced after a valve check.

Clean up the area(s) you think may be leaking with WD40 and then run the
engine, the oil pressure at idle should force the leak and then you can
    remedy.

If it is it is just a case of undoing the allen bolts taking off the
cover, replacing the gasket and popping the cover back on. If you get a
willing assistant to hold the bike over to the right you wont even need
to drain the oil. otherwise rig up a stand to lean the bike.

    or

    pay someone to do it.
    Yes.

Haven't you got a decent interweb connection yet? Or have you got me
hooked on that game and then left me to it?

  8. well if you switch "decent" for "any" then the answer is "no". I'm
currently sat at the nearest internet café - also know as "Mum's".

I'll get set up soonish. really.

You sorted out dates to come down yet?

What you say is right about the wd-40 but I had an intermittent leak on
one of mine and it'd show up when it felt like it through the gasket.
Sometimes it would run for days without so much as a drop and then I'd
come home one day and it'd be all down the side of the cover.
Make sure it isn't the allen bolts themselves that aren't the problem.
If any have been over tightened and had the thread semi-stripped, that
will cause the case to not be tight enough, so the oil will get past
    that way.
Or lay it on a blanket.
That's where a lot of my Bandit problems started!

Too fuckin right. I've found that whenever I've payed someone else to do
work on a bik, they've always fucked it up, or taken some sort of shortcut
    / bodge.

You do realise that to some of us less mechanically minded folks you might
as well be writing Martian... Oh...

    As you were then.

Yup. While I don't advocate the way Sir.Tony prattles on about a certain
bike dealer of the same name as the bike we are discussing, it is true
to say that they performed at least one bodge (right in front of me I
might add) after some work I paid them to do went wrong and I took it
back for them to fix it.
