Oh, yes, I just re-read sweller's post properly. Lost power first.
Hmm. Makes my suggestions seem rather unlikely.

Still, if it happens again, wiggling the key while coasting wouldn't
be difficult, and if it later refuses to start, swapping relays or
fuses isn't usually that hard by the roadside.

Maybe as has already been suggested, just a piece of crap momentarily
    clogging the main fuel feed.

Yebbut... There is no mention of it "being like when you run out of go
juice" which is how fuel starvation problems /should/ manifest.

Granted and I am with you about 95% of the way here but losing power is
entirely consistent with a breakdown of virtually any component in the
HT side of things. And I can think of more than one reason for it
happening on the LT side as well.

Well there was mention of it feeling like it had lost power first but
you make a good point about running out of juice. However when I've
been in similar situations if I know I've plenty of fuel I've never
thought to compare it with running out of fuel.
A coil breaking down possibly and I suppose a condensor on the way out
or an intermittent connection to the points fucking up one cylinder
    would feel like this.

If it has a vacuum operated fuel tap this could be the problem - split
diaphragm in tap or crud causing intermittent fuel cut off.

Lack of vacuum tap aside my bike has two feed taps (On, Off, Res) either
side of the tank each feeding a carb through 8mm pipe. On top of that
there is an 8mm balance pipe from each carb's fuel pipe banjo to the
    other carb's banjo.

I don't see physical fuel supply as a problem.

The loss of power was as if it were seizing - quick but not as if the
kill switch had been hit (if it had one) - rather than the fuel
    sputtering effect.

You get plenty of warning when it's running out of fuel as there are two
feeds - one to each carb - and each carb then also feeds the other via a
    balance pipe.

It didn't feel as if it had run out of fuel. I'm beginning to think 27
    year old wiring...

The ignition block has also started to become a bit of a bugger. The
switch works fine but the key needs a bit of wiggling to operate the lock.

Bike ran faultlessly today when I went to Salisbury and back via the A272
(~200 miles round trip) but that didn't have any prolonged 100+mph stints.

If you can't get on with an R1 I think you may struggle with the riding
position on this one as it's a little bit compact.

Salad Dodger couldn't even get his feet on the pegs let alone ride it.
He is, however, a big fat fucker.

A splendid do. I had intended to do the track sessions on the GFR this
year but never got round to getting an entry in. Having done Charade and
Mas du Clos the weekend before I would probably have been too jiggered
still anyway. Not terribly keen on the circuit to ride anyway - a bit
too flat and unnatural for my liking.

I will still go though, just to see some of the exotica unlikely to be
    come across elsewhere.

Heh, I call him an old fruit and get rounded on. You call him a big fat
fucker and get complimented. That's just great.
    Shame, he's a model for Anglo-French diplomatic relations :)

Ah, I was, but then I had the vote losing option of taking 2 weekends
playing out on my bike out of July.

So I was going to forgo Chimay, but do JOGLE and Platyfest en route the
weekend after (which clashes with Trofeorosso) However, seems no-one
could make the (re)planned JOGLE dates of 20-23rd July, so looks like
i've coerced myself into Chimay in any case.

I'll do JOGLE later in the year I think, as i'd prefer to do it with
    people rather than solo.

I'll put up a post up sometime with a reasonable lead time.

Had similar on the R80 on long motorway runs. Turned out to be knackered
carb diaphragms making one pot (initially) run lean and was nastily
    expensive* in the end.

I know Guzzis're not the same but if it's running hot too, I'd check the
carbs and fuel system carefully - it might save a fortune.

SUBJECT: Department of Transport Press Release
    DATE: Wed, 24 May 2006
    -------------------- >8 --------------------

DEPT OF TRANSPORT INITIATIVE HAS BEEN RE-LAUNCHED, MAY 2006.

    Information Release.

Recent roadside observational studies[1] have identified a sudden and
alarming downturn in the quality of driving, in England particularly.
The Department of Transport has decided, as a matter of urgency, to
revive an earlier scheme to properly identify poor drivers, and ensure
other road users have the opportunity to recognise and avoid them whilst
    driving.

Thus from midnight on 27th May 2006, drivers who display any obvious
signs of dangerous or inattentive driving will be targeted for the
scheme. These signs include, but are not limited to, the following:

    - overtaking in dangerous places
    - following too closely the car in front
    - stopping sharply, especially to answer a mobile telephone
    or consult a job sheet
    - stopping on double-yellow lines to deliver small parcels
    - speeding in residential areas
    - driving very slowly in residential areas
    - pulling out without indication
    - performing U turns inappropriately in busy high streets
    - under taking on motorways
    - taking up more than one lane in multi-lane roads
    - playing bass-heavy music with the vehicle's windows open
    - steering with the knees to avoid dropping a mobile telephone

Such signs will, when identified by the appropriate officials (traffic
wardens, the police, lollipop ladies and street cleaners), cause such
drivers to be issued with flags, white with a red cross,
signifying the danger they represent to other road users. These flags
will be clipped to a door of the vehicle and must be kept visible to
    other drivers and pedestrians.

Drivers who exhibit especially poor driving skills (yet still remaining
below the standard required for criminal prosecution) will be required
to display flags on both sides of the vehicle simultaneously.

Departmental Under Secretary Of State, LORD ANGUS OF KITTYBREWSTER
commented, "This new scheme will make the roads substantially safer for
other users. We know that such drivers are really, really annoying. Now,
even if it's too difficult to prosecute them for every little offence,
we can make sure they are clearly identified, so that the rest of us can
    keep out of their way."

The scheme is expected to grow rapidly over the next few months, but the
department expects the number of vehicles involved to diminish equally
quickly later in the year, as the drivers concerned come to their
    senses.

    ENDS

    HUGE SNIP

    Excellent

Doddy did a gag on Sunday which started off with concern about global
warming causing small knobs and ended with the DoH issuing those
affected with similar identifying means to aid the gathering of
    statistics.
