Lead off story on the metroplex TV news programs this morning was about the
major capture and arrest of a top ten fugitive from justice.. Major crime
network broken by the arrest.. Seems that two of the outstanding crime
fighters observed some kind of late model Honda automobile with an expired
license sticker.. Upon pulling the suspect vehicle over, they discovered
that the 97 year old retired school teacher had been ticketed before for the
expired tags and there was a warrant for her arrest .. The courageous crime
fighters immediately placed the "career" criminal in hand restraints (sp
handcuffs), placed her in the back seat of the patrol car and immediately
transported the dangerous felon to jail.. She was fingerprinted,
photographed and held in custody (sp Jail).. In a matter of hours, justice
finally prevailed and someone from our crimefighting justice system came to
work and the dangerous menace to society was released.. You gotta be
kidding me... From the patrol officers responsible for taking this
"criminal" off our streets, to the booking officer who perpetuated the
disgrace, and including the jailer who turned the key on her.. These
examples of law enforcement should be fired for wasting tax payers money and
abusing the authority vested in them.. Maybe this old lady had no business
behind the wheel.. she did seem cogent to all outward appearances during her
interview.. No one knows.. I don't.. There were so many alternatives to
arresting and jailing this old lady, these shortsighted morons have no
business enforcing anyone's laws.. Have a good day..

Yeah.. 'sides.. With all the trash we got running the streets that these
crime fighters can't seem to do anything about, there has to be some
examples of "To Serve and Protect".. One of the finest hours for the
Highland Park Police Dept... I'm sure.. What is more amusing is that she was
probably in favor of their latest "crackdown" on crime in that area..Expect
to hear more of these stories from around the Ft.Worth area.. The police
dept. there are most "inventive" for "budget enhancement" schemes to ticket
motorists.. Every time they come up with another of these little plans,
there is always a parade of people interviewed that is so appreciative of
the efforts to make the streets safer..

I'd suspect that anyone of her age should not be behind the wheel.. (that's
taking into consideration, the condition of my own father).. We managed to
have DPS take his drivers license when he was in his eighties.. They did it
diplomatically and even though it broke his heart, he gave the license up
without much of a scrap.. In that circumstance, the commander of the DPS
office in Irving was very considerate of my Dad's feelings and did it
without offending him.. If they'd stopped him on the street, handcuffed him
and took him to jail, processed him like a "common criminal" , I'd have been
outraged.. Those officers had many alternatives to choose, rather than what
they did.. You are right.. when the facilities are impaired to the point of
being a danger to others as well as themselves, they should be taken from
behind the wheel.. There is a better way than what these guys did.. I don't
think any of us need that kind of "protection".. Who knows, we may be the
next ones they decide to do the "protection" to.. Whether she poses a danger
to motorcyclists or anyone else, she has lived a life that deserves all
respect and dignity from anyone who deals with her.. She sure doesn't
deserve to be treated in such a manner..

You know.. I been thinking about that last post where you commented that
those policemen were just "doing their job".. Interestingly enough, that is
what one of them had to say about the incident.. Hmmm.. I've done some law
enforcement work.. I believe when it becomes "just part of my job, to arrest
and take to jail an old 97 year old retired school teacher over a damned
traffice citation, I'd find me another "job".. Doesn't that make you kind of
wonder just what we are becoming, when we expect our law enforcement to
"serve and protect" in that manner.. Whoosh.. Damn.. what is wrong with this
world.. I've been accused of being a "dinosaur" and a few more ridiculous
things, but when this behavior becomes acceptable to me, then I am
definitely out of step..No wonder our world is so fucked up..

Who suggested that she be allowed to continue on her way.. No one has even
suggested "diminished capacity" for the lady.. Albert Nurick and his asinine
comments are not a surprise to me, but I can't believe that anyone,
especially someone of your age would find this behavior of the police
    acceptable..

I hadn't seen this report.. All I saw was the quick newscast this morning..
My concern is this.. we have police officers patrolling our streets to
"serve and protect".. During their training and orientation, they are
screened carefully to make field decisions that have nothing to do with any
"book".. In this case, this lady is 92 years old.. retired school teacher
and in her own community.. According to this report, very alert, good vision
and active in her community activities.. I can't address the issue of the
outstanding warrant.. I got the impression that it was for the expired tags
on her vehicle.. According to the newscast she was held in custody for a
while.. This report says two hours.. The decision was made to release her on
her own recognizance.. The whole episode could have been handled more
discreetly without placing her in restraints and humiliating her by putting
her through the arrest process.. I believe that I heard about the case in
Nevada, even though I wasn't aware that your aunt was involved.. Surely..
those officers who held your aunt and uncle alonside the road for that
length of time could discern the difference between bank robbers and old
people almost a hundred years old.. To me, that would not even make sense..
Especially the treatment given them in that desert heat.. I keep asking..
"is this the best we can do?" And I keep asking "Are these people we hire to
"serve and protect" us .. the best "thinking" individuals that we can find..
Then I hear some nitwit like Albert Nurick come up with his juvenile
horseshit and Sunny agreeing with him, and you .. yourself are included..
talking about some cop "just doing his job".. It is certainly no wonder to
me, that our system is in the condition it is in, with that kind of
mentality.. Again.. I do not advocate the elderly who are of "impaired
capacity" to be turned loose in a vehicle of any kind.. I do advocate
treating them with the respect they have earned and deserve, even when they
encounter our LEO's .. Most for the very first time in their long and useful
lives.. This is a SCARY situation ..

It's no different than the police who shot the gorilla in the zoo. Or
even the moron who called 911 when the gorilla got out, instead of
walking to one of the many park officials and saying "did you know you
have a gorilla out of his closure?". Instead, the police show up with
SWAT team members, rifles and shotguns and even a damned helicopter
because a gorilla was loose *in* the zoo. Then as their evidence of
how dangerous this gorilla was and why he needed to be killed, they
showed photos of a park bench turned over...HELLO! That's what
gorillas DO! Even the police didn't get a park official. Now they're
going to have police on-site at the zoo to save us from the terrible
and dangerous animals in the zoo...and if any get out of their
enclosures again, they'll be shot on sight.

Or hey, what about the "cobra" loose in the apartment building. These
dumb-shits are about to burn down their homes because a cobra is in
the neighborhood. HELLO! It's not like we don't have copperheads and
cotton mouths in north Texas! And gee, those are like WAY more
dangerous and aggressive than a cobra! One fat woman was interviewed
in the parking lot of the complex where she was sitting with a funny
looking hat and a rat next to her. She was saying how frightened she
was and she just couldn't make it any longer with that snake loose. It
turned out, she lived several miles down the road and heard about the
snake and strolled down there with her rat and lawn chair. They now
have rats in cages to "bait" the snake out. HELLO! The rats will
probably die of old age before that snake gets hungry again!

These folks have gone FREAKIN' nuts!

On a different note, but still talking about people, I keep trying to
find a good lens for my camera so I can take good pictures in Austin
this next month and every camera store I go into says either "We don't
have anything" or "we might be able to order it". If I wanted to order
it, I could do that without going through a camera shop and paying a
mark up. And then I hear "well, we can't stock everything for every
camera". What is THAT? It's a Nikon autofocus lens that I'm needing
and willing to take Sigma or Tamron. It's not like I'm trying to find
a lens for a Leica or "Goobasil" (if there was such a thing)...but
    it's a freakin' Nikon. I'm convinced that Texas is a ghost-town.
Whether it's cameras, motorcycles or what not's, nobody here stocks
anything to sell...even though every other place in the country has it
    all on hand.

I've gotten so disgusted that I don't even want to deal with these
businesses here. Does anyone know of a good camera shop who stocks
good used lenses that might have what I'm looking for?

No... I think the evidence was not just a park bench turned over, but a
woman whose arm has been half-ripped off of from her torso by the
gorills... as well as her child who was thrown by the gorilla... My
opinion, but I think that's justification...

The lady in Highland Park had an outstanding warrant.. if she was only
detained for 2 hours before being released, then she DID get special
treatment... My experience with bailing out a buddy of mine who had
outstanding traffic tickets that had been turned into warrants is that it
takes very much more time to get out... But then again - that was over at
Lew Sterrett... Also my opinion, but she had warrants that should've been
paid... She deserves no better treatment than anyone else who is taken in
for the same or similar charges.

Thanks for the input.. You have certainly clarified your position.. She
didn't have "warrants".. she had a warrant for the same reason that she was
pulled over.. Hmm.. you never said what that buddy of yours was in Lew
Sterritt for.. Nah... let's not consider her age.. her status in the
community nor the service she has contributed for almost one hundred
years... She's a desperado with a warrant.. handcuff that old battleax and
haul her ass off to jail.. Shit..

With all due respect.. you are full of shit... Any officer who apprehends or
makes a traffic stop, then proceeds to treat that stop like a felony stop is
not doing his job, he is abusing his authority.. When our police officers
commence to treat the public as their enemy, it is time to look for
professional officers.. Of course there are extraordinary circumstances.. of
course there have been tradgedies involving kids and old men.. Of course, of
course.... And "of course".. if you are that scared of the public, maybe you
should change your profession... The public is not the enemy of law
enforcement and law enforcements job is NOT to arrest any 97 year old
retired school teacher and humiliate her the way these guys did.. There are
plenty of alternatives and they considered none of them.... Bullshit
    Steve...

Hopefully the officers we have protecting us have the wisdom and integrity
to determine the difference between a retired school teacher that is almost
100, and a hardened criminal.. That woman has lived in that community for
almost all her life.. Where is she going? She would not be able to register
the car again.. nor renew her license. Come on now.. Law enforcement for the
protection and service to the communty is the function of the police.. Not
to arrest and humiliate a 97 year old woman...

  18. Remember what i was saying about the grand patriarch/matriarch losing it
and the family refusing to do anything until something messy happens in
public? Sound familiar? It's very common and here's one more example in
    the news today.

The arresting officers had to execute the arrest warrant. She, or the
family, could have taken care of things long before it got to that
point, as in paying the ticket and registering the vehicle and it's no
bid deal.. Arrest warrants get sent in the mail too, they aren't some
hidden thing no one knows about.

Bill Cosby has a joke about unpaid tickets: they are like US Savings
Bonds, the longer you keep them, the greater they mature!
