How does High Octane Fuel improve engine performance?

I assumed it slows the ignition so you could compress the fuel more
and change the timing. So High Octane Fuel on a vehicle with no Anti
Knock Sensor and the timing set up for 95 RON fuel would get no
    benefit. Is that right?

Yes. Unless an engine is designed for high-octane, delayed ignition,
whether it be fixed or electronically controlled, using the more
expensive stuff will have no benefit.

  4. In a nutshell, yes.

Of course, you do get the benefit if your engine has a higher CR and you
can make extra power from that fuel - these days with the electrickery
gizmo to make it so. The same EG will enable the engine to run on crap
    petrol, so it's a win-win.
