You don't need multiplexing to do that.

The main advantages are more complex functionality - on cars, auto lights
and wipers, lights that go off 30 seconds after you've locked the car,
locking you can set to unlock all or just the driver's door and lock
above 5mph, that kind of shit. They're doable without, but it'd be much
more complex, with all sorts of specific boxes, rather than just doing it
in software in the main ECU. Same with all the alphabet-spaghetti
electronic arse-wiping stuff - ABS, EBA, TC, radar cruise.

It also allows much simpler wiring looms - which, on a big car, saves a
shitload of weight. I've seen figures of a couple of hundred kg _saved_
    on something like a 7-series.
They've got all the kit kicking about anyway, why not...? And don't
forget, it makes it more difficult for the damn thing to be serviced
outside the dealer chain, because of the need for shitload of
diagnostics, software updates, all that crap. After all, they can't
refuse to supply the stuff to non-franchised dealers, because of the EU
block exemption rules, but they can make it fucking expensive...

  2. Havent a clue however just had an alarm system and phone alert fitted
to the new van (dealer recomended outfit) , the phone alert(non canbus)
needed a direct connection permanant feed and the system picked this up
and flashed a warning up ,the alarm (canbus suitable) no problem at all
system identified it and now tells me the active state of the alarm

Canbus is probably the way forward with all the gadgetry on our toys
    now
but like most toys we have now its becoming more difficult for us to
    fix or modify them ourselves

I respect your honesty for using 'when' rather than 'if'.

Still, if I wasn't such a big wussie I'd be plunking down the
cash to buy one myself. I've test-sat one at a dealer near me
a number of times and even refused a test ride (!) because I
figured I'd be able to hold out about 3 nanoseconds before
caving in and signing on the dotted line.

One huge problem for me is the nearest dealer I'd trust to work
on it is about 45 miles away, my nearest dealer is a complete
    shower of you-know-whats.

Heh. it really is a great bike. Mind you, I do worry about it becoming
another UKRM clit-bike, Fortunately, most people around here lack the
taste and discernment required to own a GTR.
    That is, indeed, a pain.

My 'local' Kawasaki dealer is that sort of distance away.

Mine's 2 miles or so, and they also sell Suzuki for when I fancy a
    change.

I'm stuck in a Kawasaki desert. The nearest ones are all that sort of
distance away to the east, west and south. I settled on Drayton Croft
in Hinckley because they were cheapest, but they've since proved to
have excellent customer service as well.

He has a shortlist [1] but there are also factors outside the actual
bike that affects his decision, like, service interval. If riding say
a Pan then he's got to take the bike in for a service every 4 weeks
(loosing a days money) whereas on the BM's it's every 6 weeks. Similar
with tank range, he can just safely go to work and back on one tank,
no so with many of the alternatives.

It also appears it's not quite so easy to get test rides on some of
the other bikes (no so with BM), something that becomes a deal breaker
for him, especially considering the time he spends sitting on the
things and particularly when spending something in the area of 12k?

Then he needs reasonable access to a decent dealer and if required, a
path upwards to get things rolling if the dealer is slipping on time
scales or warrantee etc (a path he has already with BM).

Then there's second hand values ...
    And mine .. ;-)

    All the best ..

Talking of automotive electrics, whatever happened to that plan to
standardize on some weird voltage, like forty-something volts?

    Interesting.

"Assuming a 6 to 8kW power requirement, it now becomes practical to
combine the starter and alternator into a single starter-generator
    unit"

So, a bit like the Dynastart on my KR200 then ;-)

What goes round (excuse the pun) etc ...

    All the best ..

Reduces manufacturing costs. I was involved in a Xerox project for their
last generation of analogue photocopiers. The introduction of CANBUS saved
hundreds of pounds per machine in copper wire and the assembly costs of the
looms. It would've been fine and dandy if they hadn't used the customers as
beta testers for the proprietary electronics and firmware.
