The Fuji Finepix S5600 at $388 looks bloody cheap at the moment.
Is it a bargain or what?

  4. Indeed. Also calibrated just perfectly for the Fuji processing
machines at your friendly <insert supermarket or major store of
choice>. Pro photog friend reckons those machines have the most
neutral colour, and rates the RAW option, so warmly recommended the
    Fuji.

So I bought a Panasonic FZ5.... Couldn't resist the word Leica on the
    lens.

PS News on the project for you Clemmo; all good.

    Clem,

We've got what I think is its predecessor in the S5000 (10 X optical zoom,
3.something megapixel) and I've found it to be a great little unit.

Wife and I took ours on a 6 month trip around Aus and it survived walks in
backpacks, being wrapped up in a dry-bag while kayaking etc.

It also took some photo's of various parts of the country that those I've
shown them to have been very impressed with (sorry I can't point you to any
examples - I've no idea how to build a website to show them off). Given we
paid around $570 for it in very early 2004 the 5600 at around $370 seems a
    bargain...

Worth getting a good sized memory card (ours came std with a 16MB one) as
the stock one doesn't give many photo's on the highest res. I think 512MB XD
    cards are under $100 now.

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Yeah I've seen 512 xd-cards for 75-ish and 1G for $100 so I reckon that's
an essential purchase. (The 16M card can hold 6 photos at full resolution!)
I just missed a deal where I got a charger and 4 NiMh rechargeables thrown
in for $399 so I might hang of a few weeks and see if anyone has any deals.
    Thanks ..... Clem

Thanks Boris, I was gonna' try the Union shopper but a few shops were
throwing in different extras so it was a bit "apples and oranges".
Now that I've missed the deals I reckon it's worth a try though.
    Thanks for the tip.

All of the above ,but Fuji RAW files are not the same format as say
Nikon or Canon , but it should come with a cd with the Fuji software .I
have the Fuji S7000 , very nice camera , very complicated and takes a
bit of getting used to after my Sony Mavica FD85.

Mine tends to flatten normal AA's very quickly ,so I bought some 2500
Nmhi rechargables and a charger from Dick Smith . AA are ok in emergency
    situationsas stated .

A good free photo editor program is The Gimp has most features of Photoshop.

I bought a 256mb card If I recall correctly on the lower resolutions say
around 2MB it will store around 400-500 images.
Can't remember what I paid for it though,I got it off Ebay
,"aussiemeory" or similar was the seller.
The Fuji takes the olympus and Fuji xd card and a (micro drive as well
in the S7000, not sure about the S5600 though).
Woolworths here are flogging the Fuji 64MB cards for around $35.00

I have the S7000 which is pretty much the same camera (12/6MP),
excellent quality, not had any problems with it in 2 years, great
    quality shots.

    For memory,

Will look up and compare prices of a couple of hundred aussie PC sites
and show the prices in order, best way to shop around.
