    Folks,
Looking for suggestions as to which bike to go for.

I will be using said bike to commute 70 miles each way across the
pennines. In bad weather I have the fallback of being able to use the
M62 or if it get really bad I can go by car.

Looking for something that will be comfortable to ride, can cruise
effortlessly, and could carry a topbox without looking like a C70.

Reasonable MPG would be nice as would good looks, but these are
    secondary.

    Budget is c£4K.

What do you ride at the moment and for how long?

Go down to any bike dealer and pick any bike that's in your budget.
They'll all do everything you want.

Sorry, in what way exactly would it be unsuitable for this task?

Tch. Kids these days, eh? Used to be that something as good (and fast)
as the Duke would be considered a very capable all-rounder, and
eminently suitable for long-distance commuting or even touring.
I hardly think it would figure one way or the other.

Dunno about the bonnie, but he should be able to get a Kwak W650 for less
than 4K. (If he can find one that is)

Oh and can you post below the bit your replying to, ta.

Looks are a personal decision but how about Honda Varadero? I get ~50
when sat at 70, drops to ~30 when riding hard. Loads of weather
protection, good view od road ( to avoid numptys) Very comfy, takes
    luggage no probs.

Pretty much any big trailee should suffice.

But how would you know? AFAIA you've never had a proper grown-up bike.
It'll do over the ton easily enough.
Naah, it's a (nearly) naked single - dead easy to maintain at home - a
couple of hours every month or so'd be enough.
    Carry glue.
But a top box is not for life, you know.

No. 102mph would be 'just'. 110 is easily enough. Have you actually
    ever ridden one, like?

I guessed it was something like that. No amount of head twirling made
    them move.

Oh. The best I could come up with was David Brent's
