I just bought an old L-reg bike which came with no documents, although
it still has number plates. Can I just get it MOT'd and take the
certificate to the post office with my insurance, or is there a
complex and expensive process to be pursued since all this SORN
business came in? If there is, where do I start?

You need a V10 tax application and a V62 log book application , both
available at the Post office , turn up with insurance and MOT , you may as
well change the taxation class to historic as you'll get free tax . Hand it
all in and your tax disc will arrive in the post quite quickly and the log
book will take weeks to arrive. Since recent changes to DVLA law you cant
walk out with a tax disc if you dont have the V5

Hog was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
"Historic" taxation class? That'll be "manufactured before 1/1/1973"

  6. You can apply for a new logbook - forms at the post office. That's easy.

If the registratyion number has been deleted from their computer, then
you need an age-related plate. You need a letter from a recognised
dating authority (Honda UK or the VJMC, for starters) giving the date of
construction (from the frame & engine numbers).

Then you need to insure it (done on the chassis number) and MoT it
    (ditto).

Then get yourself down to your local DVLA office with all the paperwork,
and they issue a log book and tax disc. It's quite simple. Even I've
    managed to do it.

  7. Bike has to be made (not registered) before 1 January 1973

Oh, mailed off the ppaers etc for your old BMW back to the DVLA with an
    explanatory letter.

This, however, is slightly flexible I`ve found. One of my old steeds was an
ex-Liverpool parks police Vespa 150 Super. I uncovered it in 1991ish, and
the last time it had been on the road was (judging by the tax disc) 1971.
Anyway, this was not on the DVLA computer when I came to reapply for the
documents. I first found this out when I got pulled over by a copper saying
"According to our computer. your bike does not exist"

I had already jumped the gun in MOTing it and taxing it under it`s original
reg number, and also I had various items relating to it`s proper reg (old
tax disks and a picture of it from an old "Liverpool History" book depicting
a rather grumpy-looking parkie astride my Vespa, with the front reg plate on
show). This, along with a letter from the Vespa Club of GB stating the
chassis number does match the age of the plate, and with explaining the
story of how I came acoss it to the nice folk at DVLA they let me keep the
original plate, and issued me a nice V5 within a couple of weeks.

PKD 60 F. Where are you now I wonder...)

  10. but you can't, now, go into the post orifice with the V62 and get a tax
disc. You have to have either the reminder form (V11?) or a V5 plus V10
    combo.

you can still take the V5 in with altered details, fortunately.

what I want is the ability to pay a nominal fee (e.g. about 10 quid) and
exchange a disc for another for a different vehicle of the same class.
You'd have to produce the documents, of course, and probably the V5 for the
one the disc was off, to prove it was yours, or something. but it'd be
bloody handy, if you have several vehicles and only one OTR at a time.

Thanks all for your comments and advice. Looks like I can swing tax-free too.

I just need to get the dam thing running now...

I was given an MZ 250 in a non working state. No paperwork ie 'log book'
or bill of sale. The guy who owned it had died some months before. I
wrote to the DVLA explaining this and reference the number plate, frame
and engine number and got a new 'log book' return of post.

Last time I had a similar scenario (with an MZ unsurprisingly) I just
went to the Post Office where they have the appropriate forms.

In fact I have another two machines I have no paperwork for. I really
should get round to sorting it.

This one was last taxed in 1975 and the DVLA inform me the number
plate has been deleted, so I need to join the owners club, fill in a
    V5/55, a V765 and probably then I can fill in a V62, and, strangely
enough, it is a non-running MZ. The DVLA were very helpful and
    friendly on the 'phone.

It's an ES250/2 "sport" in cream and black with bar-end indicators,
generous cosmetic rusting and no l/h sidepanel. Turns over well but I
can't get the bugger to run for more than about 5 revolutions on a
    good kick. Yet...

The ugly, slow[1] and crappy type, I imagine.

[1] Or non-running, in this case, which is a 90% subset anyway.
