    Hi,

First time post here..hope I am not breaking any protocols by this request.

My nephew has this bike, and last week it spat the dummy.

He started it up, and it ran real ragged, spewing lots of blue smoke, and
    running real rough.

It died and would not restart. The plug showed plenty of fuel, but would not
kick. It has heaps of compression, and whacks out a huge backfire after
trying to kick start it. A bump start won't work either.

We purchased a brand new NHK plug, and no change...just flooded all the
    time.

We removed all fuel in the bowl of the carby, and tried again..still no go,
and plug was damp again. We also tried new fuel.

Removed the coil and got it tested...it is ok.

There is a small black ignition box on the wiring harness....is there a
condensor or something in this unit that could be affecting startup ? How do
you test it to see if all is ok?

The only thing we can think of to do, other than those things tried, is to
pull it apart and try to see if it is a timing issue.

We are about 50Kms out of town, hence the questions, otherwise we will have
to try get it to a repairer in town.

Naturally, we have no workshop manual, and are flying blind...ah well, at
least we are having a go!.

If anyone has any contributions to assist, we sure would appreciate the
    help.

    Thanks all

lots of smoke ? gearbox oil ?
crap in the carb needle and seat not shutting off fuel ?
    sounds like a flooding carb
    got compression ?
    got spark ?

got fuel obviously , maybe too much

    Stand by to be exterminated.
Pretty normal for a smoker, though ;-)
The hell I know anything about smokers, but does it actually spark?
It's meant to have some kind of fangled[*] power-valve thing, is
    that working?

When you say it has heaps of compression, did you test that with
a compression tester or just yer boot?

How the F#gh is gearbox oil gonna' get in there?!!?
(OK; conrod through the case, via the breather/airbox and intentional
    sabotage excluded!)

    Does it actually have spark?
[waves surreptitiously for the others to gather around]
Why don't you stick your little-finger up the plug-cap and give it a kick?

Many years ago, race car at Bathurst trundles into the pits with
enormous clouds of smoke billowing out behind it. Excited reporter
    shoves microphone in drivers face:

R: MATE! What's happened to your car?
    D: <deadpan> It's got a problem with the alternator.
    R: Alternator?!?!?
D: Yeah, a piston hit it.

  9. Take left side off, check that screws that hold magneto and coil haven't
come out and damaged coil, it is a problem with some early RM's

Ok I admit I don't know anything about RMXs but what's at the right-hand
end of the crank that needs gearbox oil?
    (Primary drive?)

Yes I've heard a few variations on that attributed to a few different 60s
    and 70s touring-car drivers.

I like Barry Sheene's one too: "What is plobrem, Barry-san?"
    "It's missing a bit"
    "Missing a bit?"
"Yeah, missing a bit of crankcase!"

its common on RGV's to have a bad crank seal and suck up gearbox oil

    RG500's also do the same

wouldnt doubt that MX bikes would be capable of the same
